Day 132 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Morning Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The last update on this page for the 2021/22 Season and as has so often been the case this season, it is a fine start to the day. Air temperatures remained above 0c across the ski area overnight, but there should have been another piste re-freeze under the clear skies, with spring snow conditions expected today. The 0c isotherm is forecast to be a touch lower today, at around 2400m this afternoon Wind is not expected to be an issue, with perhaps some noticeable breezes springing up this afternoon.

Day 131 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Morning Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The weather remains fine! Yesterday saw snow conditions closer to what is expected in spring, with more of an overnight piste re-freeze bringing some great skiing and boarding for a time during the day and today should see a similar scenario. Wind is not expected to be an issue and the 0c isotherm is forecast to be up towards 2500m this afternoon, so it is a little cooler than recent days - but will still feel really quite warm in the sunshine.

The Linga area shuts after today, with the PLJ area remaining open until next Sunday and daily updates on this page will finish for the winter season after tomorrow morning's update, though photos and updates will continue on the What's App group. Summer updates on this page are scheduled to begin during May.

It has been an unusual season, with most of the snow falling in an intense 2 week period from late November to about the 11th December and there will be a more detailed look at the season as a whole on a future update.

Day 130 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. After another warm and sunny day yesterday, this morning has dawned fine again and it is looking good for the day. There may have been a bit more of an overnight re-freeze of the pistes overnight, which should quickly soften as the warmth builds this morning. There is also a temperature inversion this morning, with local temps dipping below 0c for the first time in a while and it is currently -0.5c at 1000m, 3.5c at 1800m and 3c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to be between 2800m and 2900m this afternoon. Wind is not expecred to be an issue today with local breezes coming and going.

Day 129 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. We saw more in the way of cloud yesterday afternoon, after a beautiful morning - but it stayed dry and it was still a very warm day with temperatures not far off 20c in the local valley. Snow conditions continue to be rather wet and soft during the day with the best chance of decent snow being early on. This morning has again started rather mild, with local temperatures recorded of 4.5c at 1000m, 6c at 1800m and 3.5c at 2200m. It is expected to be generally breezier on the ski area today. The 0c isotherm is forecast to be up at around 3000m again. There appears to be more chance of a more general piste re-freeze tonight - which could mean some improved conditions for a time during tomorrow and Monday.

Next Update:

During the day or early Sunday.

Chatel Snow Report: 15/04/2022: 6.55am

Day 128 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The beautiful weather continued yesterday with air temperatures again touching 20c in the local valley area, with a summer-like feel to the day. The pistes continue to hold up well, but the warm temperatures and lack of sustained overnight re-freezes are bringing wet snow conditions. This morning, the air temperature is again above 0c, with 5c at 1000m, 6.5c at Avoriaz and 4.5c at 2200m and another warm day is expected, with the 0c isotherm up at 3000m. There is a higher risk of showers this afternoon, with more in the way of cloud possible for a time, however, the weekend looks generally fine.

Next Update:

During the day or early Saturday.

Chatel Snow Report: 14/04/2022: 6.55am

Day 127 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The warm weather continued yesterday with afternoon temperatures in the valley close to 20c again, which is above average for this time of year. It was also noticeable yesterday that there was not much of an overnight re-freeze. This morning has started fine and again it is mild in the area, with 4c in the local valley, whereas it is closer to 6c at Avoriaz and 3.5c at 2200m. Mostly fine weather is expected today though a shower cannot be ruled out this afternoon / evening with some cloud bubbling up. Winds are not expected to be an issue and the 0c isotherm is expected to be around 3000m this afternoon. It looks like being another warm day on the ski area and the very mild conditions are set to continue into the weekend.

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 13/04/2022: 6.55am

Day 126 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Temperatures soared in the area yesterday with values above 20c recorded in the valley to bring a summer's day feel. The skies became quite hazy at times, due to the Saharan sand which was in the atmosphere. Snow conditions were reported to be good in the morning, before turning slushy in many areas during the afternoon. This morning has started on a mild note, with 5c at 1000m, 6.5c at 1800m and 7c at 2200m. Another very mild (or warm!) day is expected, with the 0c isotherm above 3000m and temperatures could get into the high teens C in the village. There may still be some haze from the Saharan sand. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with local breezes springing up here and there.

Next Update:

During the day or early Thursday.

Chatel Snow Report: 12/04/2022: 6.55am

Day 125 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. After another glorious day yesterday, with warm hazy sunshine, today has also started fine and is likely to remain so. Snow conditions were reported to be really, really good for a time yesterday morning, before the warmth set in during the day. Temperatures reached above 16c in the local valley area and it could be warmer today - perhaps reaching 20c. Current temperatures are 2c at 1000m, 9c at 1800m and 7c at 2200m - so it is rather mild at the higher elevations already.

One complication today is that there is a possibility of some Saharan sand in in the atmosphere, which could turn things hazier again - but note there is some uncertainty regarding the extent of this. Wind is not expected to pose many issues, with the chance of a noticeable breeze at higher elevations for a time this morning.

Next Update:

During the day or early Wed.

Chatel Snow Report: 11/04/2022: 6.50am

Day 124 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. After a beautiful day on Sunday, the week has started fine with a temperature inversion. Current temps are -3c at 1000m in the valley, 3c at 1800m and -1c at 2200m. Spring snow conditions are expected today, with firm early pistes soon becoming softer in the sunshine. The 0c isotherm is expected to rise to 3000m this afternoon, so it will feel warm at times. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with perhaps a noticeable breeze picking up at some elevations this afternoon. Tomorrow is still looking like becoming exceptionally mild and temperatures could edge close to 20c in the village in the afternoon!

Snow coverage on the key pistes at Linga and PLJ is still pretty good, and should continue to provide some decent conditions for the last couple of weeks of the season.

Next Update:

Early Tuesday.

Chatel Snow Report: 10/04/2022: 7.15am

Day 123 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. It is a cold start to the day in the area with current temperatures of -3c at 1000m in the valley, -8c at 1800m and -11.5c at 2200m - which is notably cold for the second week of April at these higher elevations. It is fine and there is a dusting of snow / pellets on the ground in the village.

Spring snow conditions are expected today after the overnight pisre re-freeze and wind is not likely to pose any issues, so it is looking good. It will be trending milder during the day and the 0c isotherm is expected to be up towards 2000m by the end of the afternoon and the sunshine should feel warm. This mild trend will continue, with some very mild air pushing in tomorrow, with the 0c isotherm then rising above 3000m. Tuesday could see some really quite warm weather, with values approaching 20c possible in the valley, bringing a summer-like feel and Wednesday may also see some rather warm conditions. At the moment is looks dry and mostly fine until midweek, with then perhaps more in the way of cloud and showers for a day or so - though this is far from certain. Later in the week, temperatures may trend downwards, though we are not expecting snowfall at the moment, but it does look as though the Easter period could see chillier weather at times, which should help to bring some pretty good piste conditions.

Next Update:

Early Monday.

Chatel Snow Report: 09/04/2022: 9.50am

Day 122 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

No further snow accumulations to report in the village, but it has been snowing on and off this morning and the precipitation radar suggests further showers of snow are possible during the day. It does look like being a bit of a lottery situation, but there is a chance of a band of heavier precipitation affecting the area at some stage, which could pep up the accumulations. Snow conditions are reported to be improved on the ski area, especially higher up. A cold breeze may pick up during the day at some elevations. The 0c isotherm is expected to be close to, or just below the village this afternoon.

Looking ahead and tomorrow sees the start of a drier few days, though there will be some potentially exceptionally mild air arriving for a time during the week, with the chance of a couple of days of summer-esque temperatures, with Tuesday and Wednesday perhaps seeing the highest values. Clear skies overnight should lead to a piste re-freeze. The second half of the week, may see a return to changeable weather for a time, but this is far from certain and the dry spell could continue.

Next Update:

During the day if we see more snow, otherwise Sunday am.

Chatel Snow Report: 09/04/2022: 7.05am

Day 122 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel - a very brief update... after 2 days of rain in the village, it is currently snowing, with a dusting of snow on some surfaces. A light snowfall is possible down here during the day and the lower pistes should see a useful refresher, after taking a bit of a battering over the last 48 hours. Current temps are 0c at 1000m, -4.5c at 1800m and -6.5c at 2200m... Update to follow...

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 08/04/2022: 12.50pm

Day 121 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

There have been some heavy spells of rain in the village this morning and strong winds have been causing some issues with the lifts, though most are currently running. The snow/rain boundary is towards the top of the ski area, so it is not a particularly pleasant day. Further rain is expected this afternoon and tonight, before that colder air arrives to bring a bit of snow to the village by morning. Any colder air looks like being shunted out of the way quite quickly, with the chance of some exceptionally mild air arriving for the first half of next week.

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 08/04/2022: 7.30am

Day 121 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update..

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The rain continues at lower elevations of the ski area this morning, with the snow/rain bounday up towards 1700m/1800m at the moment and it looks like fluctuating between those sorts of levels during the day, perhaps rising towards 1900m for a time. As always, there is a margin of error of approx +/- 150m in these forecast levels. The rain and snow is expected to be persistent and heavy at times during the day, with further significant accumulations of snow at the very highest elevations of the ski area. Winds are forecast to be strong to gale force at higher elevations, so lift disruption is again a real possibility. A cold front is expected to bring some snow to the village early tomorrow, with snow showers possibly bringing a covering lower down during the day, though - as mentioned previously the vast majority of this precipitation event will have occured before the arrival of the colder air - so we are not expecting much snow to fall at 1200m tomorrow, but some sort of spell of snow is likely.

Below are some forecast graphics for wind gusts and snow accumulations from the hi-res Arome model.

Avalanche blasting has been heard in the village this morning and the avlanache risk is very high up above 1900m according to the latest bulletins.

Day 120 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It has been raining hard here in Chatel since mid-morning, with the snow /rain boundary fluctuating around 1600m, with the accumulating snowline somewhat higher than that. It is also windy and the Cornebois chairlift has been closed.

Not the most pleasant day! Stronger winds and more rain are expected tomorrow.

Next Update:

Early Friday.

Chatel Snow Report: 07/04/2022: 7.40am

Day 120 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There has been some overnight rain, with snow restricted to higher elevations. Current temps are about 3.5c at 1000m, -1c at 1800m and -3.5c at 2200m. Alot of precipitation is expected over the next 48 hours. After a fairly dry start to the day today, showery precipitation is set to return this morning, with the snow rain boundary perhaps coming down to 1400m for a time, before creeping up the mountain during the day and reaching between 1700m and 1900m this evening and tonight. Drier periods are possible during today. Snow accumulations are expected to be restricted to the higher elevations (see graphic below). Winds are set to become strong today, bringing the chance of some issues. The precipitation continues tomorrow with a snow/rain boundary of 1800m to 1900m (+/- 150m), however, gales may bring lift disruption. Wind gust forecast graphics are below.

The heaviest of the rain (with high level snow) is expected to fall tonight and during tomorrow. Large totals of rain are possible below the snow/rain boundary. A cold front should bring a plunge in the snow/rain boundary on Saturday morning, however, at the moment it looks as though the vast majority of the precipitation event will have passed by the time we see some snow down here.

Chatel Snow Report: 06/04/2022: 5.30pm

Day 119 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The glorious sunshine gave way to cloud this afternoon and there has been some noticeable gusts of wind too. Temps got up to about 14c in the valley, with spring conditions on the pistes.

Precipitation is on the way. The snow / rain boundary looks as though it will be similar to what was suggested earlier this morning, with perhaps it coming down towards the top of the village area early tomorrow, before rising during the day - to 1500m/1600m during the afternoon and 1700m by evening. Strong winds are also forecast - which could being some lift issues. Thereafter, Friday may see the rain rise to around 2000m. A cold front should bring a bit of snow on Saturday morning. Note that during heavier precipitation, the snow/rain boundary could come down a bit lower.

Early indications for next week suggests some exceptionally warm air arriving for a time.

More on all of this early tomorrow.

Chatel Snow Report: 06/04/2022: 7.00am

Day 119 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. It is a fine start to the day here, with early temperatures of -0.5c at 1000m, +0.5c at 1800m and -0.5c at 2200m. There should be some sunshine for a time today, but some precipitation is expected this evening and tonight. The 0c isotherm is expected to be at around 2100m/2200m this afternoon. Wind is not expected to be an issue, though it is likely to get generally breezier at some evevations as the afternoon goes on.

The snow rain boundary this evening may be around 1700m, falling to 1400m by early tomorrow morning. Below is the Arome graphic for potential accumulations overnight.

During Thursday, further rain and snow is expected, perhaps becoming heavy with the snow rain boundary rising to 1600m by early afternoon, 1800m by evening, then 1900m by early Friday, then 2000m during Friday. A cold front could bring a plunge in the boundary to the village on Friday night, with Saturday perhaps seeing the 0c isotherm at 900m/1000m, with the chance of some snowfall. Alot of precipitation is expected, so heavy snowfalls are possible at the highest elevations, but it will be a rather wet period on the lower half of the ski area.

Next Update:

Will probably take a look at the snow/rain boundary again on an update later today.

Chatel Snow Report: 05/04/2022: 6.55am

Day 118 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is some cloud overhead this morning but some brighter weather is expected today. Winds are not likely to be an issue, with just some local breezes picking up from time to time. Temperatures are currently close to 0c at 1000m and between -2c and -3c at the 1800m and 2200m elevations, so the deep cold of previous days has eased. The 0c isotherm is expected to be at between 2100m and 2200m this afternoon.

Snow conditions were reported to be excellent on the pistes yesterday and they should be pretty good again today, though we are heading into a milder phase. Much of the village fresh snow thawed yesterday afternoon, which is to be expected in April as soon as the sun comes out.

Some rain is expected to arrive at some point of tomorrow afternoon, perhaps towards evening, with a snow/rain boundary of around 1700m / 1800m. Snow could come down as low as 1400m by Thursday morning, before the boundary rises during the day to 1900m. So there could be some areas of glue like snow at some elvations on Thursday morning. Further rain, with a snow/rain boundary of around 1900m is forecast for Friday, with that boundary coming down overnight into Saturday. There is still plenty of uncertainty as to whether the village will receive snowfall on Saturday. Below is the Arpege rain equivalent precipitation graphic for the period to 7am Saturday, which suggests alot of rain is on the way. Significant snowfalls are possible at the highest elevations of the ski area, but it could rain to 1900m / 2000m for a time. We will be able to start looking at the details of amounts and snow/rain boundaries, once these periods come into the range of the hi-res model.

Chatel Snow Report: 04/04/2022: 2.30pm

Day 117 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The sun has finally popped back out, leading to a rapid thaw in the village, however, piste conditons this morning were reported to be exceptional for April. I found some powdery snow a short distance above the village this morning, though areas which were seeing some sunshine were rapidly turning heavier. All in all, it has been a very wintry few days and snow conditions are a real bonus for those lucky to be out here at the moment.

The weather is set to change from Wednesday night with some sort of rain and snow to rain to snow event still looking likely. Some charts today are very unsettled for the period Wed night to Saturday, with quite alot of precipitation possible. Snow/rain boundaries look very uncertain at this juncture, but some sort of milder period does look like coinciding with some of the precipitation, with a large question mark as to when colder air may bring a return of the snow. At the moment Thursday and Friday do look like being wet to fairly high elevations, so a washout is a possibility, but the snow could return by the weekend, so it will be a very interesting couple of days of model watching coming up.

Chatel Snow Report: 04/04/2022: 6.35am

Day 117 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is some mist and cloud knocking about early this morning, but this is expected to clear so we should see some sunshine return today. Current temps are around -3c at 1000m, -7c at 1800m and -9c at 2200m, so the cold air is still with us. The 0c isotherm is forecast to rise to around 1600m this afternoon, but any sunshine will bring a much warmer feel. Snow conditions should be excellent on the pistes today. Wind is not expected to cause any issues, though there may be a noticeable breeze picking up at higher elevations this afternoon.

It is a bit early to glean too much from the models this morning, as the latest updates are not yet uploaded, however, it does look as though the weather may become unsettled from midweek. At the moment it looks as though rain could fall to fairly high elevations, with a chance of a cool down for the weekend. The charts have a bit of knife edge look about them, with a chance that the colder air could extend far enough south to bring an earlier switch from rain to snow - but at the moment it looks as though Thursday and Friday could see the snow / rain boundary up at around 2000m.

Chatel Snow Report: 03/04/2022: 8.30am

Day 116 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Morning Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. the weekend of winter snow conditions continues this morning, with cold temperatures and further flurries. Current temps are -4.5c at 1000m, -9c at 1800m and -12c at 2200m. No further measurable accumulations are expected and wind is not expected to cause any issues on the ski area today. The snow on the ski area is cold, dry and powdery and is providing some excellent piste conditions for early April. Hopefully, we will see some sunny intervals arriving during the day.

A dry start to the coming week is expected, with mixed messages from the models for the rest of the week, with perhaps the chance of further rain and snow arriving during the second half of the week. The GFS model suggests a snow to rain to snow event from about Wednesday to the weekend, which appears to be a possibility, but there is loads of uncertainty regarding the position of the areas of precipitataion and how cold any air will be in our area. More on this on subsequent updates.

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 02/04/2022: 4.45pm

Day 115 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Much of the precipitation today has been to the west of this area, so it has been a case of light outbreaks of snow and flurries here in the village, with only a further dusting to add to the overnight total. The air is cold, and the trees have retained their snowy covering - though the sun did try to come out, and there is some thawing on some surfaces. The village covering won't last long, however, the pistes have had a really useful boost.

Some charts suggest some more rain and snow is on the way later this week, however, this is not a foregone conclusion and some charts are drier. Temperatures look fairly subdued this week, though when the sun comes out, it should feel warm again and much of the village snow will disappear quite quickly. As mentioned this morning, there should be piste skiing at PLJ down to 1300m right up to the end of the season.

Next Update:

Early Sunday.

Chatel Snow Report: 02/04/2022: 8.00am

Day 115 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There has been another 4cm on snow on our measuring surface overnight, bringing the total snowfall so far to 14cm at 1150m and there is about 10cm on some surfaces on the ground. There is more snow just a bit further up in the village, and less down on the Dranse road. The snow cover is generally inconsistent, depending on the typ of surface. There have been one or two avalanche blasts this morning, so there should be a fair bit of fresh higher up.

Temperatures are currently cold for early April with -4c recorded recently at 1000m, -9c at 1800m and -11.5c at 2200m. A noticeable wind is expected at the highest elevations of the ski area today, with further snow showers, snow flurries. The hi-res model shows not too much more snow in our immediate area today, but it does show a signal for some useful snowfalls a very short distance to the northwest - towards Bernex. Below is its prediction for additional accumulations in the area by midnight tonight. Light snow is currently falling.

Day 114 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 3...

Weather & Snow Report:

It has been snowing on and off since the last update - though there have been no measurable additional accumulations here in the village - just a dusting. We are expecting some snowfall tonight, but the hi-res model suggests there could be some noticeable variations of accumulations over relatively short distances, with the Bernex area appearing to benefit most - however, whether a computer model is able to really pick out such local variations remains to be seen and so it looks like it could be a bit of a lottery scenario. Further snow showers are possible tomorrow. The ski area should be beneffiting nicely, setting up some good conditions for the run up to Easter and the end of the season.

Chatel Snow Report: 01/04/2022: 12.45pm

Day 114 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

A further 3cm of snow has been recorded in the village since the last update, bringing the total at our location to 10cm for this snowfall so far. Snow depths are inconsistent at 1150m, with no or very little snow on tarmac, concrete etc, but there is a nice covering on other surfaces. There was noticeably less snow a short distance down the valley towards 1000m.

Chatel Snow Report: 01/04/2022: 7.25am

Day 114 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. It has been snowing overnight. Further outbreaks of snow are expected through the day, potentially pepping up at times and the 0c isotherm is expected to move down to 600m. A noticeable wind is expected at the higher elevations of the ski area with white out conditions at times.

Some surfaces have up to 7cm on them in the village (metal surfaces and some wood and grass surfaces, with others (concrete etc) seeing only a wet dusting and there was no snow on the main road into the village (Rte de Thonon).

Current temps are a touch above 0c at 1000m, -4.5c at 1800m and -7c at 2200m.

Below is the hi-res model forecast for accumulations. Take off a couple of cm's in the village and a few higher up, for an estimate of potential additional snowfall to what has already fallen early this morning.

Chatel Snow Report: 31/03/2022: 4.55pm

Day 113 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is currently raining in the village at 1200m, however it is snowing a bit higher up on the ski area and there is settling snow above about 1600m by the looks of it. The snow/rain boundary is still expected to arrive in the village this evening and there should be some sort of covering down here by the morning, with further snowfalls tomorrow and tomorrow evening and snow showers or flurries on Saturday. Flakes of snow are expected down to Lac Leman during tomorrow and Saturday, which shows it is quite a cold couple of days coming up for the start of April. A significant snowfall is possible at higher elevations by the weekend, bringing a timely top up of the pistes.

Chatel Snow Report: 31/03/2022: 7.35am

Day 113 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. It is a wet start here in Chatel with current temperatures recorded locally of 3.5c at 1000m, 0.5c at 1800m and close to -3c at 2200m. The snow line is somewhere above the village, but there is no visible on the trees higher up at the moment, however, it is snowing at 1600m according to local webcams. Outbreaks of rain and snow are expected today and wind is not expected to be an issue, though they may become more noticeable later.

The snow / rain boundary is expected to yo-yo just above the village today, though we could see some wet flakes at 1200m. This evening, that boundary should come down to the village , with the 0c isotherm expected to be around 1300m at 10pm, so we may see a covering of snow on some surfaces in the village by morning. Higher up, snow should be accumulating nicely. During Friday, the 0c isotherm will continue to fall, with outbreaks of snow falling down as low as Lac Leman.

Below is the Arome model's view on accumulations. Thereafter, at the moment, it looks as though there could be some light snow falling on Saturday, with Sunday looking drier, but both days should see the 0c isotherm remaining below the village, with winter conditions for the ski area - though if the sun comes out, it will feel noticeably milder. Dry weather is a possibilty during the first half of next week.

During the day with an update on the position of the snow/rain boundary.

Chatel Snow Report: 30/03/2022: 8.10am

Day 112 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The weather has changed overnight and it is cloudy and drizzly at the moment. Current temperatures range from 4.5c at 1000m, -0.5c at 1800m and -2c at 2200m. Wind is not expected to be an issue today with further outbreaks of rain and snow for the ski area. It should be snowing higher up and the snow/rain boundary may be around 1500m/1600m for a time today (+/-150m), before easing back upwards to 1700m/1800m this afternoon and evening. Showery outbreaks overnight and tomorrow should see that boundary come down at times again, but the first signs of snow for the village may be later tomorrow and during tomorrow night. Thereafter, the village should wake to a wintry scene on Friday morning, with snow falling down to Lac Leman during the day. There remains a chance of a significant fall of snow on the upper ski area by the weekend, depending on what falls on Friday and the village could see a fair bit of snow too, but we will know more when this period comes into the range of the highest range models this time tomorrow.

Below is the Arome model's view of the developing snowfall. The fourth graphic is the broad brush Arpege model's view of accumulations by Saturday - note the caveat that this graphic should not be used to pinpoint an accumulation forecast at a specific location - but what it does show is the potential for significant snowfall in the area.

Chatel Snow Report: 29/03/2022: 10.35am

Day 111 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

We have hazy sunshine here at the moment with 8.5c being recorded currently in the valley and the Morzine station is showing 10c at 1000m, so it is quite mild again.

Any showers arriving this afternoon and tonight look like having an initial snow/rain boundary of approximately 1800m (+/- 150m) and this may come down to around 1600m by early Wednesday. During tomorrow it looks like being between 1550m and 1700m. On Wednesday night, the boundary could come down to between 1400m and 1500m and may sit around those sorts of elevations during Thursday. On Thursday night, that boundary should come down to the village and to below village elevations on Friday morning, in fact, by Friday afternoon / evening it looks like it could be snowing right down to Lac Leman.

As for quantities, there is the chance of a significant fall of snow by the weekend for the upper half of the ski area. Below is the Arpege model's view of accumulation by Friday evening. Remember, that this model takes a broad brush approach to topography, so take accumulations at specific locations with a large pinch of salt, however, it shows the potential for some decent quantities.

We will know more at this tme tomorrow...

Chatel Snow Report: 29/03/2022: 8.10am

Day 111 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The weather is changing today and there is expected to be more in the way of high cloud, making any sunshine hazier and thicker cloud will increase risk of showers later, with some more general precipitation expected overnight and at times tomorrow too. There will be a look at the snow rain / boundary forecast and potential accumulations on an update during the day, though the snow accumulation graphic below does provide an indication.

Air temperatures are currently above 0c in the area, with 1.5c at 1000m, 3c at 1800m and it is a touch above 0c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is forecast to be at around 2300m this aftenoon. Winds may be noticeable today and strong this afternoon at some elevations an below is the Arome gust forecast for 2pm from the Arome model.

Chatel Snow Report: 28/03/2022: 8.15am

Day 110 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The weather is clear again this morning, with another light temperature inversion in place across the ski area. It is currently close to -0.5c at 1000m, 2.5c at 1800m and 1c at 2200m. Another day of sunny, freeze-thaw, spring snow conditions is expected with wind not likely to bring any issues. The 0c isotherm is forecast to up at around 2500m this afternoon.

The weather is set to change from tomorrow. After the high pressure dominated period, we will see low pressure play more of a role and eventually, some colder air will arrive too, bringing a return of some winter weather. There will be plenty going on during the second half of the week, with precipitation on and off from Tuesday evening to Friday - but an initial looks at the precipitation forecast and 0c isotherm suggests the following... take off 300m to give a very approximate snow/rain boundary...

Wed: 2am: 1974m / Wed: 10am: 1800m / Wed: 2pm: 1934m / Wed: 6pm: 1889m

Thurs: 2am: 1766m / Thurs 10am: 1723m / Thurs: 3pm: 1457m / Thurs 10pm: 1237m

Thereafter, the 0c isotherm could be around 1000m by the early hours of Friday morning.

So, outbreaks of rain and snow appear to be on the way with perhaps a significant fall of snow for the upper part of the ski area, but we should also see some accumulations in the village by the weekend. Details, as always, are far from being resolved, but we will have a better idea of the Tuesday night / Wednesday period when that comes into rainge of the hi-res models this time tomorrow morning.

Next Update:

During the day or early Tuesday.

Chatel Snow Report: 27/03/2022: 7.40am

Day 109 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The weather is in Groundhog Day mode at the moment, with gloriously clear skies, warm sunshine and freeze-thaw snow conditions. Temperatures in the village and valley area rose to around 16c yesterday afternoon. Despite the warm temperatures, piste conditions continue to be very resilient in many areas of PLJ and Linga.

There is again a temperature inversion this morning with -1.5c currently in the immediate valley area, 3c at 1800m and 1.5c at 2200m. The clear skies will have brought another overnight re-freeze of the snow pack. Wind is not expected to be an issue today with local breezes coming and going.

After a fine day tomorrow, the weather is still set to change. Cloudier weather on Tuesday may be followed by some rain and snow on Tuesday night, with the resrt of the week seeing changeable and increasingly cooler conditions. By Thursday / Friday, we may start to see the chance of some snowfall arriving to the village, with the potential for some cold and snowy weather next weekend. The details for all this are far from being resolved as there are some notable differences between the models again, but it does look as though April will start on a different note to what we have seen through much of March.

Next Update:

During the day or early Monday.

Chatel Snow Report: 26/03/2022: 6.55am

Day 108 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel on another clear morning, with another lovely day of spring weather expected. There may be more in the way of breeze today in some higher areas, especially this afternoon. There is currently a light temperature inversion in place with around -0.5c recorded at 1000m, 2.5c at 1800m and 0.5c at 2200m. The clear skies should have resulted in another overnight re-freeze of the snow pack, so spring snow, freeze-thaw conditions are likely again today. The 0c isotherm is expected to be up at around 2400m/2500m this afternoon.

The dry and mostly fine weather looks like lasting a couple more days, before we start to see a change from Tuesday, with more in the way of cloud and an unsettled period perhaps becoming established from Tuesday night / Wednesday, with some rain initially, but there could be some snow later in the week. More on this on subsequent updates.

Next Update:

During the day or early Sunday.

Chatel Snow Report: 25/03/2022: Midday

Day 107 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The weather is stunning again today and it feels really warm in the sunshine and 14c has already been recorded at 1000m. However, the weather is set to change next week, perhaps from as early as Tuesday night, with some charts suggesting the arrival of rain, with snow for the top of the ski area. At this stage, details such as those snow/rain boundaries are difficult to pin down, but it does look like it could be a mild and unsettled scenario developing, until colder air arrives this time next week, which could see snow to lower elevations. Note that there are some pretty big differences between the models for next week, so this outlook could very easily change - but an unsettled spell of some type does look as though it is on the way.

Before then, there should be a few more days of warm sunshine and spring skiing conditions.

Next Update:

Early Saturday

Chatel Snow Report: 25/03/2022: 6.55am

Day 107 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is another temperature inversion in place this mornng with -1c recorded in the immediate valley area, with close to 2c at 1800m and close to 0c at 2200m. Another sunny day of spring snow conditions is expected, with wind not an issue, with local breezes coming and going. There could be a bit of cloud bubbling up this afternoon which brings a low risk of a shower to the area, but it could easily remain fine.

The sunny weather is set to continue through the weekend and into the early part of next week. There are still signs of a change from around mid-week next week, with something rather more unsettled arriving, bringing the possibility of a rain to snow event. More on this on subsequent updates.

Next Update:

Probably a look at next week's change during the day today.

Chatel Snow Report: 24/03/2022: 6.50am

Day 106 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The lovely March weather continued yesterday, with warm sunshine and spring, freeze-thaw snow conditions across the ski area. Again, there is a temperature inversion in place this morning, with -2.5c recorded at 1000m, 2.5c at 1800m and 1c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to be sitting up at around 2400m today. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with local breezes springing up from time to time.

Some charts suggest the chance of one or two showers knocking about tomorrow, but this looks like a fairly low risk at the moment and the dry and mostly fine weather may well last into the early part of next week. Thereafter, there are increasing signs of a change arriving from around mid-week of next week, with a rather more changeable period developing, perhaps bringing a rain to snow event, but more on this on subsequent updates. There is just a chance that the start of April may be rather different to what we have seen through much of March. Snowfall is a possibility.

Next Update:

During the day or early Friday.

Chatel Snow Report: 23/03/2022: 6.50am

Day 105 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Skiing and boarding conditions remain pretty good in the areas which retain good snow cover, particularly in the Linga and PLJ areas, with overnight re-freezes softening to bring spring snow conditions. The snow does get rather wet and chopped up during the afternoons, which is to be expected for the last third in March.

This morning the skies are clear and we have a temperature inversion with -3c in the immediate valley area, a touch below 0c at 1800m and a touch above at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to be up at around 2350m this afternoon. The wind gust forecast does suggest there may be a noticeable breeze at some of the highest elevations early this morning, but wind is not expected to be an issue in general today in the Chatel area.

Although one or two showers may pass through the area later in the week, the outlook remains mostly dry and the GFS model run this morning shows no measureable precipitation in the nexr 10 days. Other charts suggest the possibility of something arriving at the back end of next week, but that is over 7 days away, so again should be treated with caution. It is looking increasingly likely that March will end up being a really very dry month.

Next Update:

During the day or early Thursday.

Chatel Snow Report: 22/03/2022: 6.55am

Day 104 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Temperatures are generally sub zero across the ski area early this morning, with a temperature of -3c in the valley at 1000m, -2c at 1800m and -3c is recorded at 2200m above Avoriaz. Another beautiful day is expected with freeze-thaw, spring skiing and boarding conditions, with early hardness of the pistes softening in the sunshine in many areas. The 0c isotherm is expected to be situated at between 2100m and 2200m this afternoon, helping to maintain some good skiing and boarding through the day. Although wind is not expected to be an issue, local breezes could spring up from time to time and be noticeable.

The generally fine and dry weather is set to continue. Some charts suggest the chance of local showers at the end of the week, however, significant snowfall is not expected in the next 7 to 10 days. Yesterday evening's ECMWF charts were hinting at much colder air arriving by the middle of next week, which could being a bit of snow too - so that is something to keep an eye on, though it is only a possibility at the moment.

Next Update:

During the day or early Wed.

Chatel Snow Report: 21/03/2022: 11.25am

Day 103 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Morning Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is a glorious day in Chatel, with warm sunshine after the chiilly start. Temperatures dipped down to -2c overnight in the immediate valley area, with below 0c values recorded at all other elevations of the ski area too. It is still around -1c at 2200m, and the 0c isotherm is expected to be around that elevation this afternoon, however, the warm sunshine will bring spring snow, freeze-thaw conditions, at most elevations.

Yesterday saw some cloud move into the area during the afternoon, with some snow flurries reported in parts of the ski area.

Looking ahead and it looks like staying mostly fine for the next few days and there is little prospect of much in the way of precipitation arriving in the near future, with perhaps the shower risk increasing for a time later in the week. This morning's ECMWF model run shows less than 2mm of precipitation in the next 10 days. However, as mentioned regularly, the models can shift quite quickly for the period beyond 5 to 7 days, so there is plenty of uncertainty by the time we get to this time next week.

Day 103 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 20/03/2022: 6.55am

Day 102 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Fine weather is expected today and there is currently a fairly normal temperature profile across the area this morning with -1c in the valley at 1000m and it is -3c up at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to be up at around 2000m/2100m this afternoon. Wind is not expected to be an issue on the Chatel ski area today, with local breezes springing up here and there - though note that it is forecast to be very windy a relatively short distance away in the valley around Monthey in Switzerland (see gust graphic below). As was the case yesterday, freeze-thaw conditions are expected on the ski area today, with spring snow conditions developing - so hard pistes early, softening during the day. The fine weather is expected to continue through next week, with no sign of anything in the way of snowfall over the next 7 days. There could be a change at the end of the month, but that is a long way off and is far from certain. However, there should be plenty of very good spring piste skiing in the area through the coming week, under some warm feeling sunshine.

Chatel Snow Report: 19/03/2022: 6.55am

Day 101 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There are signs this morning that the rather annoying amounts of cloud which were seen yesterday, may clear to a greater extent today, so hopefully it will be a brighter day. Current temperatures are ranging from 1.5c at 1000m, 1c at 1800m and it is a touch below 0c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to be up at around that 2200m elevation during the day. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with local breezes springing up here and there. There is a possibility of one or two showers knocking about the area tonight, but these are not expected to amount to much. It looks at though we will see more in the way of daytime sunshine over the coming few days, back to a rather more normal freeze-thaw, spring snow situation, with overnight piste-refreezes, chilly nights in the valley and warm feeling days... it should be lovely at times next week. However, for those looking for some more snow, there is no prospect in the near future of a significant snowfall, with the models painting a very dry outlook.

Next Update:

Early Sunday.

Chatel Snow Report: 18/03/2022: 6.55am

Day 100 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. After a warm feeling day yesterday, which saw hazy sunshine, this morning has dawned quite foggy in the valley, with variable amounts of cloud stiing above the mist. There is some uncertainty regarding whether the cloud will thin and break to allow through some sunshine today, but hopefully that will be the case, though there may be local variations. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with local breezes coming and going, perhaps noticeable for a time at some higher elevations. Current air temperatures are above 0c in the area and it is between 2c and 4c at the 1800m and 2200m elevations. The 0c isotherm is expected to be sitting close to 2500m during this afternoon.

Looking ahead, and although there is the chance of one or two showers during the period from tomorrow to Sunday, these are not expected to amount to very much at all, with the models keeping any suggestions of more general and heavier precipitation away until the 26th/27th - which is too far away to take seriously at this stage. At the moment, the period from Sunday and through next week, looks mostly sunny.

Next Update:

Either later or Early Saturday.

Chatel Snow Report: 17/03/2022: 6.55am

Day 99 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The skies look a bit clearer this morning, so hopefully there will be some hazy sunshine today, though cloudier periods are being forecast. It is a mild start again, with current temps of 1.5c at 1000m in the valley, 5c at 1800m and 3c at 2200m, however, the skies should have been clear enough to have brought some re-freezing to the pistes overnight, though that effect may not last long with another day of mild temeratures expected. The 0c isotherm is expected to be sitting between about 2800m and 2900m this afternoon. Although wind is not expected to be an issue, a noticeable breeze may pick up this afternoon, especially later.

There is again the chance of a bit of precipitation at the weekend, but at the moment, it is not expected to amount to very much and the generally dry signal continues on various models out to 10 days.

Next Update:

Probably later in the day.

Chatel Snow Report: 16/03/2022: 1.40pm

Day 98 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

We have hazy weather here in Chatel with the haziness appearing to be a hangover from the Saharan sand event of yesterday. It is mild, and tempertures have been close to 13c in the Abondance Valley and 11.5c has been recorded at 1800m. We may see higher values than these during the afternoon.

Looking ahead and there is a signal for some precipitation on Saturday night / early Sunday, which could bring a light snowfall to the area and is now something to keep an eye on - though it looks 50/50 as to whether it materialises. Apart from that, the outlook is a mostly dry one and both major models suggest it being dry and reasonably mild through the whole of next week.

Next Update:

Early Thursday

Chatel Snow Report: 16/03/2022: 6.50am

Day 98 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. After the Saharan sand weather of yesterday, with brought sand to the snow of the ski area and some glue like conditions at some higher elevations - which had seen a spell of wet snow early yesterday before it turned to rain, today is looking like seeing much brighter weather. Temperatures are mild this morning, with 1c recorded at 1000m in the immediate valley area, but we are also seeing 8c at elevations around 1800m and 5c at 2200m! Hopefully any clearer skies overnight will have allowed some pistes to re-freeze due to radiative cooling of the snowpack, however, the overnight piste maintenance should have elimated those areas of glue snow.

The 0c isotherm is expected to be up above 3000m today and there is the chance of some exceptionally mild temperatures for the village and the ski area in general. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with local breezes coming and going. The mild and fine weather is set to continue tomorrow.

There'll be a look at the outlook on the next update, which is expected during the day.

Next Update:

During the day.

Chatel Snow Report: 15/03/2022: 10.55am

Day 97 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The early rain finished a bit earlier than expected, though the sky has been an odd colour this morning, due to a saharan sand event, which we get from time to time in the Alps. This is the first one of this season and happens when sand particles in the atmosphere, which have been transported from the Sahara by favourable winds, have been deposited by the rain onto the snow pack, giving the snow a bit of a peachy colour. This is not the best news, however, reports suggest snow conditions are not too bad this morning, but the snow is obviously soft and wet - and looking an odd colour!! Hopefully some clearer skies tonight will bring a piste re-freeze and once the piste maintenance crews have done their work, conditions may look more normal on piste over the coming days, however, the peach colour may still be noticeable in off piste areas until we get another snowfall. The sand particles in the snowpack also accelaerate the spring thaw.

The photo below was taken with an iphone this morning - no filters etc used.

Looking ahead and there appears to not be much fresh snow in the outlook, despite the GFS charts suggesting some arriving on Sunday / Monday. This scenario does not look too convincing and the ECMWF model paints a mostly dry picture on its latest update, so anything that arrives on Sunday / Monday would be a bonus. Until then it looks mostly dry and mild or very mild by day, with some overnight temperature inversions if skies area clear, bringing piste re-freezes. Skiers and boarder are likely to see spring type skiing conditions (freeze-thaw) during the rest of the week (as long as we see those overnight re-freezes).

Next Update:

Early Wednesday.

Saharan sky early this morning.

Chatel Snow Report: 15/03/2022: 6.50am

Day 97 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is some rain affecting the village early this morning, with the snow/rain boundary expected to rise above 2000m and eventually to around 2300m, before the rain peters out. Timing of drier weather arriving appears to be around mid-morning, perhaps during the second half of the morning. Current temperatures are close to 3c at 1000m, 2c at 1800m and a touch below 0c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to rise to 3000m this afternoon, so it will become really quite mild in the village, especially if some sunshine arrives too. Winds may be an issue today and there is currently a strong to gale force southwesterly blowing at some of the highest elevations - so a noticeable wind at times is expected during the day, but there is some uncertainty regarding whether it will bring any disruption in terms of uplift. Below is the Arome wind gust forecast for midday.

There'll be a look at the outlook on an update during the day.

Chatel Snow Report: 14/03/2022: 3.40pm

Day 96 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The weather has been lovely again today, with some warm sunshine for the village and for those on the ski area. There were a few cm's of fresh snow from the overnight snowfall, with 5cm to 10cm reported above 1800m.

There is a little bit more precipitation on the way tonight, though this looks like it will be a rain event for the ski area, with the snow/rain boundary rising up to around 2300m. The damp weather could spill over into the early part of tomorrow, but the weather is expected to brighten up, however, it will become milder with the 0c isotherm rising to 3000m. This mild trend could be enhanced on Wednesday, when the 0c isotherm may rise above 3300m, so there could be some very mild temperatures recorded in the valleys.

There remains very little sign of any significant snowfalls in the near future, however, last night showed that little bonuses can spring up at short notice and the skiing remains good on many of the key pistes.

Next Update:

Early Tuesday.

Chatel Snow Report: 14/03/2022: 6.55am

Day 96 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There has been some overnight precipitation, with a dusting of snow in the village and there looks to have been a light snowfall above the village, with snow visible on the trees. Current temperatures are -0.5c at 1000m in the local valley, -2.5c at 1800m and -3c at 2200m. A fine day is expected with the 0c isotherm rising to around 2300m/2400m this afternoon. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with perhaps some local breezes becoming more noticeable here and there this afternoon.

There is the chance of some showers arriving overnight, perhaps lasting into the first half of tomorrow morning, but these are likely to end up falling as a bit of rain up to the top of the ski area. Thereafter, it is a dry prospect through the rest of the week, with a question mark for the weekend, but more on that on subsequent updates. There is likely to be an update during the day today, looking at the snow/rain boundary for the potential showers overnight tonight.

Chatel Snow Report: 13/03/2022: 8.25am

Day 95 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Morning Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is a veil of high cloud across the area this morning and air temperatures are above 0c at all elevations with 3.5c recorded at 1000m in the valley, just over 1c at 1800m and 0.5c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to be at around 2200m/2300m through the day. Winds are very uncertain today (see the wind gust graphic below), with a gale blowing through the Monthey area over the border, however, Chatel may not see any wind issues in general, but noticeable gusts could appear at higher elevations. Some sort of foehn event cannot be ruled out. The cloud may thin enough to allow some hazy sunshine at times today with some rather mild temperatures for the village.

There is the chance of a bit of snow tonight, with some showers possibly arriving later this evening! Below is the hi-res snow accumulation forecast for the period up to 7am tomorrow, showing that a dusting is possible in the village and a light snowfall higher up. There remains plenty of uncertainty as to whether this actually happens and there are some very mixed messages from the models regarding snow/rain boundaries - so it will be interesting to see if anything arrives.

The next opportunity for snowfall is looking like being next weekend, but before then, it is expected to become very mild during the coming week. Fortunately , snow conditions on many key pistes at PLJ and Linga have been good in the Chatel area over the last couple of days, though areas which rely on natural snow are struggling and these will come under more pressure in the next 7 days.

Chatel Snow Report: 12/03/2022: 7.50am

Day 94 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. For the first time in a while, temperatures are above freezing early in the morning in the immediate valley area with 1c currently being recorded at 1000m, -2c at 1800m and -2.5c at 2200m. It is dry this morning, with a hazy atmosphere, with some high cloud. Wind is not expected to be an issue today, with perhaps some local gusts springing up here and there and the 0c isotherm is expected to be at around 2000m this afternoon. The cloud could thicken at times, though hazy sunshine is possible at any time of the day. Tomorrow looks similar, though there could be a foehn effect kicking in later - more on that tomorrow.

There remains a chance of a dusting for higher elevations on Sunday night with the models then showing a dry week next week. There are some suggestions of more in the way of precipitation arriving at the end of the week / next weekend, however, this does not look like the most convincing scenario at the moment - but it is now one to keep an eye on - and if it is still being suggested by the models by the time we get to Monday, then it will be of more interest.

The ski area continues to see spring skiing conditions (freeze/thaw) and is likely to do so for the next week, with daily variations due to amounts of cloud and how much of an overnight re-freeze there has been. Temperatures look set to be generally mild through the daytimes, perhaps becoming very mild at times, especially towards midweek next week.

Next Update:

Later or early Sunday.

Chatel Snow Report: 11/03/2022: 8.00am

Day 93 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is plenty of clear sky above Chatel this morning with some patchy high cloud in the distance. There is expected to be a bit more high cloud during the day today, turning the sunshine hazier and the weekend may see more in the way of cloud in general. Current temperatures are -3c at 1000m, -1c at 1800m and -2.5c at 2200m.

The local forecasts are talking about foehn winds over the coming days. Below is an Arome forecast graphic showing wind gusts at midday. Note that the winds are forecast to be strong over on the Swiss side and also down in the area around Chamonix. This may well result in a foehn effect in some valleys, however, at the moment it looks as though there is a chance that we may escape this today. The graphic also shows why we here in Chatel should always treat the Chamonix forecast with caution in terms of its relevance to our area - Chamonix may not be far away, but the weather can be noticeably different in terms of wind, foehn and when looking at snow accumulations. So, we'll be keeping an eye on things today to see if there is any foehn effect, especially as those strong winds are forecast to be very close by.

Daytime temperatures look like being generally rather mild over the coming days and any cloud will accelerate the spring thaw.

There remains the possibility of some evening showers on Sunday and overnight into Monday, but these are likely to be rain on the lower half of the ski area and a light snowfall at the higher elevations - but there will be a look at this on tomorrow morning's update.

Dry weather is likely next week, with some charts suggesting the possibility of precipitation later in the week - however, there remains no convincing signs of significant snowfall returning.

Chatel Snow Report: 10/03/2022: 8.00am

Day 92 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is a noticeable temperature inversion across the area this morning with -5c at 1000m in the immediate valley area, -0.5c at 1800m, but 2200m is recording a positive value of 0.5c. The skies are clear and the 0c isotherm is set to be up between 2200m and 2400m during the day. Wind is not expected to be an issue. Sunshine is expected through the day, though there may be more in the way of high cloud later in the day.

Friday and Saturday are set to continue the dry theme, with variable amounts of cloud. Any periods of thicker cloud will unfortunately potentially accelerate the spring thaw. On Sunday, a front will be lurking out to the west and some charts do show it may come close to this area, so showers cannot be ruled out during the period from late Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning. Some charts suggest it will stay dry - so whether there is a bit of rain and snow, is very uncertain, but, the cloudier skies would potentially lead to a net loss of snow on the lower half of the ski area. There is also the chance of a bit of foehn at times from tomorrow and into the weekend, which would also reduce the chances of any Sunday evening precipitation.

Thereafter, daytime temperatures look milder next week, with the dry spell continuing. Tuesday and Wednesday could see some very mild daytime conditions. None of this is unusual for the middle of March, so it is a bonus that most of the key pistes have retained good levels of snow cover. Although the GFS model suggests a bit of precipitation arriving at the end of next week, the mostly dry theme could easily continue into the last third of the month.

Next Update:

Later or early Friday.

Chatel Snow Report: 09/03/2022: 8.00am

Day 91 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The morning has dawned clear yet again, with local temperatures of -5.5c at 1000m, -5c at 1800m and -4c at 2200m. Sunny weather is expected through the day and wind is not expected to be an issue, with just some local breezes springing up from time to time. The 0c isotherm looks like edging above 2000m this afternoon, so temperatures will be a touch milder today.

This morning's model runs continue the dry theme. There looks like there will be some precipitation not too far away to the west of the area over the weekend, however, this morning's ECMWF model keeps it dry out to 10 days and GFS is simalarly dry, with only a dusting at the weekend. There could be a hint of foehn between Friday and Sunday. Any chances of useful snow at the weekend have appeared to have gone on the latest charts, so although the models could change favourably, that will be less likely as we get nearer to the period concerned.

Next Update:

Later or early Thursday.

Chatel Snow Report: 08/03/2022: 7.50am

Day 90 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The skies are clear once again above Chatel and the dry period continues, and is set to continue through the week. Early temperatures are cold again, with -7c recorded in the immediate valley, -4.5c at 1800m and -3c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to rise to between 1800m and 1900m today, with the sunshine feeling warm at times. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with local breezes coming and going.

The outlook remains a mostly dry one. The models show a rather stubborn block of high pressure over Europe, with low pressure unable to penetrate eastwards into our area. This standoff between the airmasses could last for some time and this morning's GFS model is effectively dry for the next 10 days, apart from a dusting at the weekend. The ECMWF model does show bit more in the way of precipitation edging into the area on Sunday, but this looks like a scenario which would bring very little snow to this region and could disappear on subsequent updates. On the plus side for snow lovers, at least we do have something to keep an eye on, with a low chance of something more potent arriving.

Snow conditions on key pistes continue to be remarkably good considering the limited opportunities for fresh snowfall, helped by the excellent work of the piste maintenance crews. Almost 2m of snow had been recorded in the village from various snowfalls up to the 10th of December, with the following 3 months delivering an additional 80cm. Although more snow has obviously fallen at elevations above the village, this does demonstrate that we have had a very front loaded winter, in terms of snowfall.

In summary... the sunny weather continues...

Next Update:

Later or early Wed.

Chatel Snow Report: 07/03/2022: 7.40am

Day 89 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. It is another cold start across the ski area with current recorded temperatures of -8c at both the 1000m and 1800m elevations and it is -9c at 2200m. Colder pockets of air are possible this morning in the area. Another fine day is expected across the ski area with the 0c isotherm rising up to between 1600m and 1700m, with some pleasantly warm feeling sunshine. The wind is not expected to be an issue, with local breezes springing up here and there through the day.

Looking ahead and the dry weather is set to continue through the rest of this week, with some charts from the GFS model suggesting the chance of a bit of rain and snow at the weekend, followed by another week of dry weather. The ECMWF model yesterday evening showed a similar scenario in terms of a bit of weekend precipitation and this morning's run also shows the chance of something at the weekend, perhaps arriving on Saturday night. At the moment, any precipitation looks rather insignificant and the ECMWF model is in dusting territory, however, it is something to keep an eye on.

Next Update:

Later or early Tuesday.

Chatel Snow Report: 06/03/2022: 8.50am

Day 88 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Morning Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The weather is set to continue to be fine for the next few days here in Chatel with plenty of sunshine. Although the the 0c isotherm will stay fairly subded into the first half of the coming week, we are in March and the sunshine will feel warm and continue the spring-like conditions on the mountain. Later in the week, we may see a slightly milder trend and a continuation of the dry spell. Both major models continue the dry spell out to about 10 days this morning and there is little sign of a significant snowfall from the latest updates. Things can and do change very quickly when it comes to outlooks beyond 5 to 7 days with these models, but at the moment, the outlook is a mostly dry one.

Back to today and current temperatures are cold across the ski area with -7c in the immediate valley area and values of between -8c and -9c at the elevations of 1800m and 2200m. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with some chilly gusts coming and going at some elevations, but the sunshine should feel warm again on those sunny aspect slopes.

Next Update:

Later or early Monday..

Chatel Snow Report: 05/03/2022: 7.50am

Day 87 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The weather is set to be fine and mostly sunny through the weekend and probably well into next week. Wind is not expected to be an issue today on the ski area, though a chilly breeze may spring up here and there, especially at the highest elevations. Temperatures are currently ranging from -8c in the local valley at 1000m, to -6.5c at 1800m and -7c at 2200m. The downward trend in the daytime 0c isotherm level continues today and it is expected to sit at around 1300m this afternoon, though the sunshine will feel warm and those sunny aspect slopes may well see the softening of the overnight hard pack - however, the air is colder than normal for this part of the season.

The outlook remains a mostly dry one this morning. The GFS model keeps it dry until the 13th and the ECMWF model is also mostly dry, with a bit of precipitation possible in a week's time. Therefore, we can say this morning, that there are no convincing signs of significant snowfall in the next 10 days, with only the possibility of some precipitation in the 7 to 10 day range. The colder than average temperatures of this weekend look like continuing through into the first half of the coming week, before temperatures trend upwards later next week.

Conditions remain remarkably good on many key parts of the ski area, however, it is fairly obvious that there has not been that much snow recently.

Next Update:

Later or early Sunday..

Chatel Snow Report: 04/03/2022: 7.50am

Day 86 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The skies are clear again this morning and it looks like being yet another lovely day. Current temperatures range from -4c in the local valley, -2c at 1800m an -5c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm will be a touch lower this afternoon, at around 1700m and tomorrow it will fall further. Wind is not expected to be an issue today, though there may be a bit more breeze at some higher elevations, especially this afternoon. The clear skies and 0c isotherm levels will help to maintain the existing snow cover on the main pistes.

As for the potential for snowfall... this morning's models suggest that any snowfall, which was shown on yesterday's charts for the end of next week, could be in danger of disappearing completely. It is still a long way off, however, the charts have developed unfavourably overnight on both major models and some suggest the chance of a foehn for the weekend of the 12th/13th. There is obviously a chance that the charts will change again, so more on this on subsequent updates.

Next Update:

Later or early Saturday..

Chatel Snow Report: 03/03/2022: 7.25am

Day 85 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel, on another fine morning. Current temperatures are ranging from -1.5c at 1000m, 0.5c at 1800m and -2c at 2200m. Wind is not expected to be be an issue today on the ski area and there should again be plenty of lovely sunshine, with the 0c isotherm up at around 2000m this afternoon. It should again feel warm on the sunny aspect pistes and in the village by this afternoon. Colder air is on the way over the coming days, with that 0c level subdued over the weekend, with some noticeably colder night temperatures too.

There remains no convincing signs of snowfall ovet the next 7 days. Some charts suggest precipitation thereafter, so the back end of next week is now of interest for some snowfall, but it does not look a certainty at this stage - but it is one to keep an eye on.

Next Update:

Later or early Friday..

Chatel Snow Report: 02/03/2022: 7.20am

Day 84 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Fine weather is ongoing here in Chatel, though there may be a bit more in the way of high cloud today, perhaps making the sunshine hazier. Wind is not expected to be an issue and the 0c isotherm is expected to rise to between 2150m and 2275m today.

There is a temperature inversion in place this morning, with -5c recorded in the local valley and it is close to 0c at both 1800m and 2200m.

There is little or no sign of any measurable snowfall in the next 7 days, though some charts do show some snowfall thereafter, however, that signal for snowfall is far from convincing at the moment. There remains a possibility of colder weather arriving next week, which will help to maintain the snow cover.

There remains plenty of very good skiing and boarding in the area, however, the frustrating 2022 for those seeking plenty of fresh snow continues. The December / January / February period did see around average precipitation, however, much of that fell in the first 10 days of December, which saw almost 2m of snow fall in the village. Sunshine amounts in the area have unsuprisingly been above average.

Next Update:

Later or early Thursday..

Chatel Snow Report: 01/03/2022: 7.45am

Day 83 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel and a happy St. David's Day for Welsh readers... we have clear skies again this morning, which has been a feature of the vast majority of the season so far and there is a temperature inversion in place too. Current temperatures range from -6.5c at 1000m in the Abondance Valley, close to 0c at 1800m and -1c at 2200m. Fine weather is expected through the day and wind is not likely to pose any issues. It should feel very mild again on those sunny slopes and really quite warm in the village sunshine. The 0c isotherm is expected to be between 2000m and 2200m during the day today.

Dry weather is expected to continue for the rest of the week, though there may be more in the way of high cloud at times to make the sunshine hazier. The weekend could see a few flakes of snow but this morning's charts are still looking generally dry for the next 7 days and potentially out to 10 days. One thing which has eveolved in the charts in the last day or so, is the posiibility of some really quite cold air being fed into the area from the weekend onwards, from high pressure over northern Europe. This could bring some below average temperatures for a period, though with very little or no snowfall.

One thing which was noticeable yesterday was that there was evidence of man made snow being added to the bottom section of the piste at the Super Chatel telecabine. The vast majority of key pistes continue to provide some really rather good piste skiing and boarding as we head into March.

Summary - fine today. Cloudier weekend and potentially much colder next week - though very little, if any snowfall is on the way, according to the latest charts.

Next Update:

Later or early Wed.

Chatel Snow Report: 28/02/2022: 7.45am

Day 82 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The skies are clear again this morning with cold temperatures across the ski area, with -7.5c recorded recently in the local valley, between -5c and -6c at 1800m and -7c at 2200m. Wind is not expected to be an issue today and the 0c isotherm is expected to rise to around 2000m this afternoon and it is likely to feel warm in the sunshine, especially in the village this afternoon.

This morning's models show a dry outlook, with little signs of the change hinted at by the GFS model yesterday. It does not look like becoming particularly mild, though as March starts tomorrow, any sunny spells will feel warm. Clear skies should help to maintain the snow on the key pistes (along with the excellent work of the overnight piste maintenance crews), with spring skiing conditions expected at times. There may be cloudier spells in the mix too, though the timing and extent of these are yet to be determined.

So, plenty of very good piste skiing and boarding is expected, however, there is no sign of a March powderfest in the near future, if the latest model runs are to be believed.

Next Update:

Later or early Tuesday.

Chatel Snow Report: 27/02/2022: 7.50am

Day 81 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel on what looks like being another lovely day across the ski area. Current temperatures are -8c at 1000m in the Abondance Valley, between -5 and -6c at 1800m and -7c at 2200m. Wind is not expected to be an issue today and the 0c isotherm is forecast to rise to around 1700m today.

Although it looks dry for several days, some of this morning's charts have brought the possbility of changeable conditions returning later next week. This is something of a change in comparison to the model runs of the last couple of days, particularly where the GFS model is concerned, so it remains to be seen if this is a potential pattern change or a blip in a high pressure dominated outlook. The GFS model suggests cold and snowy weather for several days from next Thursday night - not with big quantities of snow, but it is a wintry outlook on this morning's output from this model. The ECMWF model is not so keen on the GFS scenario and is drier and not as cold, so we shall have to wait and see how the output evolves over the next 24 hours. More on this on subsequent updates.

Chatel Snow Report: 26/02/2022: 8.20am

Day 80 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel, where it is a cold start to the day wih temperatures of -7c in the immediate valley area, similar values at 1800m and it is closer to -10c at 2200m. Fine weather is expected today however, there is some breeze higher up and the wind forecast graphics for 10am and 3pm are below. It appears generally less breezy this afternoon across the PDS.

The latest model runs suggest very little precipitation in the next 10 days in this area and the GFS model run this morning is effectively dry out to about the 11th March. The ECMWF model shows a tiny bit of precipitation next Wednesday night, but again, there is little sign of significant precipitation / snowfall on the way. On the plus side, the weather will be fine for most of the time but temperatures don't look super mild and may be around the average for early March. The result may be that it will be feeling pleasant in the sunshine, but potentially without any heatwave, so snow conditions on key pistes should continue to hold up well.

Day 79 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Beautiful weather today in Chatel, with warm sunshine for those lucky enough to be on the ski area.

After the chance of one or two flakes of snow overnight, the weekend looks being a mostly fine one. Winds are expected to increase overnight tonight and so tomorrow morning may be breezier higher up on the ski area for a time, before easing during the afternoon and evening. At the moment, the wind strengths don't look disruptive, but the wind gust forecast graphic will be posted in the morning. Thereafter, it looks as though we have a week of dry weather... at least, so there should be some lovely spring like conditions for the ski area through next week.

Next Update:

Early Saturday.

Chatel Snow Report: 25/02/2022: 8.05am

Day 79 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There has been a dusting of snow in the village in the early hours of this morning, with 0.5cm to 1cm down here. Current temperatures range from -1.5c at 1000m, -6c at 1800m and -9c at 2200m. No further measurable snowfall is expected today, with perhaps one or two flakes falling. The 0c isotherm is forecast to reach around 1300m today with variable amounts of cloud, but with brighter periods coming and going too. Although wind is not expeted to be an issue, a cold breeze may pick up this afternoon. The wind may become stronger tomorrow.

Loking ahead and the latest GFS model paints a dry picture out towards the middle of March. This morning's ECMWF model is dry for a week, but shows a possible incursion in about 7 days time. So, at the moment, there are little in the way of convincing signs of significant snowfall returning, but as is often pointed out, the models can and do change quite rapidly when looking at outlook's beyond the 5 to 7 day range.

Chatel Snow Report: 24/02/2022: 7.30am

Day 78 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is currently a temperature inversion across the area, with the immediate valley seeing temperatures below -3c at 1000m and it is 0.5c at 1800m and close to 1c at 2200m. The pistes are likely to have seen a re-freeze under the clear skies at all elevations. Today is looking dry with sunshine potentially becoming hazier. Winds are expected to increase during the day at higher elevations, becoming strong during the afternoon in particular, especially during the second half of the afternoon and below is the wind gust forecast graphic for 2pm. The wind could cause some lift disruption this afternoon.

On the plus side of things, there is a bit of snow on the way tonight, starting later this evening and potentially clearing away before breakfast time tomorrow. The snow/rain boundary may be marginal for the village initially. The 0c isotherm forecast is as follows for the period of precipitation... 11pm: 1497m / 1am: 1432m / 3am: 1078m... so that snow/rain boundary looks like easing down from approx 1200m to 800m before the precipitation peters out. Accumulations are expected to be light , according to the hi-res Arome accumulation forecast, which is shown below.

Looking ahead and the models are painting a mostly dry picture through into the end of the first week of March. There are enough differences to suggest that this is by no means certain and there are also some mixed messages regarding temperatures, however, at the moment there is no sign of significant snowfall returning in the next 10 days. There should be plenty of good piste skiing and boarding as we head into the first week of March, the exceptions being on the south facing pistes which rely on natural snow.

Chatel Snow Report: 23/02/2022: 5.50pm

Day 77 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Ther weather has been beautiful here in Chatel today with some excellent skiing and boarding conditions across the area and it was good to see the south facing, 100% natural snow piste of L'Epervier back open after the recent snowfalls. It did get warm today and it was like a spring day in the village, with strong sunshine. Some pistes are reported to have seen spring snow conditions this afternoon, whereas other areas saw winter snow conditions maintained.

The next point of interest regarding snowfall is Thursday night / Friday - more on this on tomorrow morning's update with a look at the snow/rain boundary and accumulation forecast.

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 23/02/2022: 7.55am

Day 77 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... the weather is looking fine today and current temperatures are around -2.5c at 1000m in the immediate valley area, -1.7c at Avoriaz and -4.5c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to above 2500m this afternoon and evening, so it will feel warm on sunny aspect slopes during the day and wind is not expected to be an issue. A temperature inversion is expected tonight, with a re-freeze for the pistes. Shaded slopes today should remain in the freezer under the clear skies and retain winter snow conditons.

Tomorrow looks like seeing stronger winds arrive again to the ski area, heralding the arrival of a cold front moving through overnight into Friday, which looks like bringing a few cm's to the ski area. Thereafter, this morning's GFS model update suggests dry weather for the following 7 to 10 days. The ECMWF charts do show a different evolution of the pattern, which could bring snowfall opportunities in about a week's time, if it develops favourably - so the dry further outlook is by no means a certainty - but remains a possibility.

Chatel Snow Report: 22/02/2022: 5.40pm

Day 76 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It has been one of the better days of this month on the mountain, after the fresh snow of last night. The skies cleared this morning and there were some healthy accumulations higher up. We found areas of 25cm plus between 1600m and 1800m in the Barbossine area, though wind had created deeper pockets and drifts. As the snow was a mix of powder, graupel and pellets, it was dense enough to provide some float for those heading off piste. The snow has obviously refreshed the pistes, though the areas which were grass previous to yesterday, have seen the snow thaw quite quickly - particularly on those lower south facing slopes and in the village. As we approach March, it gets more and more difficult for some areas to re-build lost snow cover, however, this is not relevant in many key areas at Linga and PLJ, which should see their bases last until the end of the season (as usual). As mentioned previously - the run to the bottom of PLJ normally retains its cover to enable skiing and boarding down to 1300m until the end of the season.

There is the chance of a bit more snow on Thursday night / Friday, but apart from that, the models are suggesting a mostly dry outlook into the first week of March, with high pressure becoming dominant. After some very mild sunshine tomorrow, there will be a cool down at the back end of the week, but thereafter, next week does look dry, often sunny and with an elevated 0c isotherm bringing temperture inversion conditions overnight. This will potentially result in spring conditions for the ski area and some really warm feeling sunshine.

Chatel Snow Report: 22/02/2022: 7.40am

Day 76 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... it has snowed overnight. Showers of graupel and snow since the last update have brought up to 14cm of fresh snow here in the village, which has ended up being a decent return. One or two flurries are still knocking about but we are not expecting much more in the village today. The precipitation radar suggests showers rolling into the Jura from the northwest, but these are fading by the time they reach our area.

Current temps are 0c at 1000m, -5c at 1800m and -7.5c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to climb to between 1600m and 1800m this afternoon - but the trend will be milder tomorrow. Wind is not expected to be an issue today. The avalanche risk is expected to be very high today - check the links at the top of the page or ask the pisteurs for the latest info.

There will be a look at what the outlook has in store on the next updates.

Day 75 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 4...

Weather & Snow Report:

Many lifts were closed this morning and some upper lifts are still closed as this update is being typed. There have been a couple of beefy snow showers moving through the area in the last couple of hours, but these have not added much to cover to the village. A trip up to Mouet at lunchtime today found drifting snow and a few cm's of fresh up there, with some sizeable drifts in places, however, this snowfall has yet to deliver the goods. The latest precipitation radar does suggest a rather more organised band of snow heading towards the area, so fingers crossed.

Day 75 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 3...

Weather & Snow Report:

Nothing much to report so far, with about 1cm recorded in the village and we have just had a few flurries simce the initial burst of snow earlier in the morning. One area of snow appears to have missed us, according to the precipitation radar, however, there should be other areas moving towards us this afternoon and this evening. Updates will appear accordingly.

Wind is affecting lift operations, with many lifts currently closed across the area.

Day 75 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Rain is currently falling in Chatel, but this is expected to turn to snow in the village this morning.

Temperatures currently range from 1.5c at 1000m, -2c at 1800m and -4c at 2200m.

It is very windy higher up and strong winds will feature today, bringing blizzard conditions to some higher areas. Below are 2 wind gust forecast graphics from Arome. The winds look strong enough to bring the possibility of lift disruption.

As for the snow, below is the latest accumulation forecast graphic. The 0c isotherm is expected to be at the following elevations during the day. A rough guide to the snow/rain boundary is to take off 300m from these values.

9am: 1371m / Midday:1088m / 4pm: 1089m / 8pm: 1182m / Midnight: 1309m / 4am Tuesday: 1105m

Weather & Snow Report:

The weather has been fine today, with some pleasant sunshine and a bit of breeze. View below from a trip up to Mouet this afternoon. The snow en-route was wet on the paths.

We still have a precipitation event on the cards, commencing tomorrow morning. The rain snow/boundary looks marginal initially for the village, but there is a reasonable chance of settling snow arriving at 1200m by mid to late morning. Thereafter it looks like snowing on and off through into early Tuesday, with the 0c isotherm hovering around the village.

Day 74 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel, where temperatures are currently ranging from a touch below -1c at 1000m in the immediate valley area and -6c at 1800m. Dry weather is expected today, with variable amounts of cloud and brighter periods in the mix too. A noticeable southwesterly breeze at higher elevations of the ski area is expected to pick up during the day.

Rain and snow is set to arrive later in the night. There will be a look at the potential snow/rain boundary on this evening's and tomorrow morning's updates. Below is the hi-res accumulation forecast graphic. Note that there may be a bit more snow to follow in the period beyond the time frame of that forecast.

Chatel Snow Report: 19/02/2022: 2.35pm

Day 73 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

We ended up with a dusting of graupel this morning and we found about a cm up at 1500m. A bit more is reported to have fallen higher up, but the one thing which was noticed this morning was the very noticeable loss of snow at 1200m this week. This was accelerated with yesterday aftenoon's foehn wind and last night's rain.

There is still plenty of cloud knocking about today, but there are some brighter periods coming and going.

Fresh snow is forecast to return to the village on Monday morning and below is the Arpege view of that snowfall. Remember, this model takes a broad brush to topography, so amounts in specific locations are to be taken with a large pinch of salt, but it does suggest that that we have at least a chance of a useful snowfall, with perhaps an outside chance that it could become significant. By significant we mean enough to bring genuine pleasure to those who ski or board powder. We will know more when this next precipitation event comes into the hi-res model range tomorrow.

Chatel Snow Report: 19/02/2022: 6.20am

Day 73 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There has been some rain falling in the village overnight, which will hopefully have brought a few cm's higher up. The snow/rain boundary is still above the village at the moment, but we may see a few flakes down her.,e before it dries up this morning. Winds don't look like being an issue today in comparison to recent days, however, there may be some noticeable gusts at some of the highest elevations. Temperatures currently range from 1c at 1000m, -4c at 1800m and -6c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to be at around 1500m this afternoon.

Sunday night looks like seeing the arrival of a cold front, with rain and snow, with the snow/rain boundary reaching the village at breakfast time on Monday morning. There is the chance of some useful cm's for the ski area from this next precipitation event, but at the moment, it does not look like bringing significant quantities of snow.

Next Update:
This afternoon.

Chatel Snow Report: 18/02/2022: 5.30pm

Day 72 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It has been a dry day today and brighter at times too, which is a marked improvement on previous days. However, there has been some foehn wind, with a sharp rise in temperatures this afternoon, with 13c recorded at 1000m, combined with a big drop in humidity - resulting in a hairdryer effect. This peaked between about 2pm and 3pm.

A front is still expected to move through overnight, resulting in a drop in the 0c isotherm. However, this front is not now expected to deliver much snowfall. During the period of precipitation, Arome suggests the 0c isotherm will be at:

8pm: 2367m

10pm: 2081m

2am: 1609m

3am: 1527m

So, there is a chance of a dusting in the village, but I wouldn't be surprised now if we see nothing at 1200m and just a few cm's higher up. Aromes's snow accumulation forecast has downgraded amounts in the valley area from this morning's update - as shown below. There is some mixed messaging from the models regarding tonight, which does bring a bit of uncertainty, however, expectations should be low.

Monday looks a potentially better scenario for us in terms of snowfall - but more on that on tomorrow's updates.

Chatel Snow Report: 18/02/2022: 6.25am

Day 72 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... where skies are clearer this morning (hooray!) and so there should have been an overnight piste refreeze. There is a slight temperature inversion in place at the moment, with local temperatures varying between -0.5c in the immediate valley area and 2c at 1800m. At 2200m, it is around -1.5c.

The weather looks OK today in terms of brighter conditions, though it will be windy again higher up - potentially not as windy as yesterday, but there may be some noticeable gusts (see wind forecast graphic below).

The 0c isotherm is expected to rise above 3000m during the day. A cold front will bring a spell of rain and snow overnight, though as mentioned yesterday, the snowy bit of this one may be relatively shortlived, especially for lower areas -with only a light fall of snow and graupel expected, and perhaps only a dusting for the village. The Arome snow accumulation graphic is below and this will be updated later.

Chatel Snow Report: 17/02/2022: 1.30pm

Day 71 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The weather has brightened up at times in the village since the morning rain, though showers have been passing through the area and strong winds remain an issue higher up. Some lifts were closed earlier, but these appear to have all re-opened apart from the Chaux des Rosees (if PDS app is correct). Snow conditons remain wet below 2000m.

A cold front associated with a storm which will be affecting Britain tomorrow (Storm "Eunice"), will cross the area tomorrow evening, bringing a sharp plunge in the 0c isotherm and a rain to snow event. I'm not convinced that this will bring mich snow to the lower elevations, as the front may move through quite quickly, with a shower lottery scenario to follow, but we will know more once this precipitation event comes into rainge of the Arome model tonight - so tomorrow morning's update will provide an estimate of accumulations. It looks as though the 0c isotherm will be back to close to the village by Saturday morning.

Before then - If there are any cleaer slots overnight tonight, then we should see the pistes re-freeze - however, cloud amounts are uncertain. Tomorrow looks like being brighter and rather mild, with the 0c isotherm up above 3000m again, so sunny aspect slopes will continue to see the snow retreat, however, there could be some good spring skiing type conditions to be found. Note that the wind is expected to pick up again during the day tomorrow and they may strong enough to cause some disruption tomorrow afternoon, especially later.

It is an odd season so far, with over 260cm of snowfall recorded in the village, most of which fell in the first couple of weeks in December, but some areas at 1200m are now back to grass again. Fortunately, the key pistes with cannon cover, continue to hold up well and should last until the end of the season. In the last 10 years, there has only been one occasion when the Rochasson run to the bottom of PLJ (1300m) has not been complete on the last day of the season towards the end of April (if memory serves me correctly).

Chatel Snow Report: 17/02/2022: 6.20am

Day 71 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. It has been a wet night in the village, with an elevated snow/rain limit.

The wet weather is expected to continue today, with some lulls, before petering out during the second half of the afternoon. Winds look like being an issue and below is the hi-res gust forecast in kmh - so some upper lifts could see disruption. The avalanche risk is also very high in the area. As for the snow/rain boundary today, at the moment, it looks like being between 1800m and 1950m (+/-100m)

A rain to snow event is expected to arrive tomorrow evening and night - more on this on the next update.

Chatel Snow Report: 16/02/2022: 1.00pm

Day 70 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Morning snow has turned to rain in the village and the snow/rain boundary is creeping up the mountain and will likely reach 2000m for a time overnight. It is windy higher up today and there is a very high avalanche risk level in place. The wet weather is expected to continue into tomorrow morning, with the snow/rain boundary in the upper half of the ski area, potentially around 1800m by then. Higher areas will benefit from snowfall, however, the lower half of the ski area will see a net loss of snow in comparison to the last couple of days. Note that it looks windier tomorrow, with gusts in excess of 60kmh possible in some higher areas (the wind graphic will be posted on tomorrow morning's update).

Hopefully, on Thursday night there will be general re-freeze under clearing skies, despite a temperature inversion - though cloud amounts are unertain by then. Some very mild air will affect the area on Friday, with the 0c isotherm up at 3000m for a time, so sunny aspect slopes will see further thawing.

A cold front should move in on Friday night, so there should be some fresh snow down to the village again by Saturday morning and the weekend in general looks chillier and more normal! Some charts suggest a bit of snow on Sunday with the chance of something more potent for Monday - however, the snow/rain boundary looks very uncertain by then - more on this on subsequent updates.

Bonjour from Chatel, where there is a bit of snow flling early this morning, bringing a dusting to the village. Temperatures currenly range from -1c at 1000m to -5c at 2200m.

The snow/rain boundary is set to rise markedly today, reaching 1500m by midday, 1600m at 2pm and around 2000m this evening. Winds are also expected to be strong on parts of the ski area today.

Chatel Snow Report: 15/02/2022: 12.50pm

Day 69 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

There have been a few snow flurries since the last upate, but nothing measurable has fallen. A trip up into the Barbossine area found around 11cm of fresh snow between 1500m and 1600m - so there have been some useful cm's, but it was a generally slightly underwhelming snowfall.

The next storm will be affecting the area from the late morning tomorrow - with rain, sleet, snow and wind hitting the ski area. The snow/rain boundary is set to quickly rise to 1500m / 1600m during the first half of Wed afternoon and 1700m by 5pm. It then looks like rising upwards to between 1900m and 2000m for the period from Wed evening to mid morning on Thursday, with a bit of snow possible back down to 1500m on Thursday afternoon, before it dries up. There may be a re-freeze of the snow pack on Thursday night if those skies clear and Friday should be brighter. The 0c isotherm will rise to 3000m or above during the day on Friday, so it will feel very mild in the afternoon.

It looks as though a cold front will move through on Friday night/ early Saturday, which should bring a return of chillier air and some weekend snow for the village - amounts uncertain at this stage.

Obviously, the incoming mild and wet weather will impact the snowpack negatively at many elevations, however, many key pistes should shrug this mini-mild onslaught off, though areas with thin natural cover on sunny aspect slopes, may return to grass again.

Day 68 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Air temperatures are a touch above 0c at 1000m and 1800m this morning, but -2c at 2200m. It is windy in parts of the ski area at the moment and below is the forecast gust graphic in kmh for late morning. Cloud is expected to increase today and the weather looks like closing in during the afternoon, with snow arriving later, preceded by a bit of sleet in the village.

The 0c isotherm forecast is expected to fall to around 1400m by 5pm, so there should be snow for the village this evening and overnight. Below is the latest accumulation forecast graphic from Arome, showing the potential for some useful cm's, and a slight upgrade in comparison to the graphic from yesterday eve.

Chatel Snow Report: 13/02/2022: 6.25pm

Day 67 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The latest news on tomorrow's potential snow event, which looks like lasting from early afternoon to the evening, with the likelihood of some further snow overnight into Tuesday too.

The 0c isotherm tomorrow is expected to be as follows:

2pm: 1489m

4pm: 1412m

6pm: 1364m

So the snow may be fairly wet in the village, but any snow on Tuesday night / Tuesday should see a lower freezing level.

Accumulations look like being modest up to 7am Tuesday - see forecast graphic below.

Another batch of precipitation heads in on Tuesday night, but unfortunately, this looks like being a snow to rain event, with rain falling as high as 1800m or 1900m during Wednesday (+/- 150m). Some charts suggest the rain and snow hanging around into Thursday, with rain for the lower half of the ski area and the snow / rain boundary yo-yoing about in the upper half of the ski area.

A cold front could bring some snow lower down by Saturday morning, but that is a long way off, so some uncertainty regarding this.

Note that the wind is expected to pick up overnight, perhaps bringing some foehn-esque conditions before the snow arrives tomorrow. The wind forecast graphic will be posted in the morning, as parts of the ski area could see some strong gusts.

Chatel Snow Report: 13/02/2022: 7.10am

Day 67 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel, where another fine day is expected, though there may be a bit more in the way of wind at some higher elevations this afternoon. Current temperatures are around -6c in the immediate valley area at 1000m and -6c at 2200m.

The weather is set to turn rather more unsettled during tomorrow, with more in the way of wind at times during the day and some snowfall is expected to arrive during the afternoon. The snow/rain boundary may initially be just above the village, however, it should be at the village, or below the village for most of this precipitation event, which may last on and off into Tuesday. 10cm to 20cm of snow is possible at elevations above the village and 5cm to 10cm for the village (there'll be a look at the high res accumulation forecast this evening).

Thereafter, it does look like turning milder, with another precipitation event arriving on Tuesday night, with snow turning to rain on the lower half of the ski area. Any precipitation on Wednesday may fall as rain below 1700m during the morning and then below 2000m for the afternoon - however, amounts of precipitation are very uncertain.

For the second half of the week, there are some very mixed messages from the models, with last night's ECMWF painiting a rather changeable picture moving forward, whereas GFS this morning has a drier secenario beyond about Thursday. However, both models look mild for the period from Wednesday to the weekend. Details to be confirmed, as there is too much variation between the models to suggest an outcome for the latter part of the week and the weekend, but the milder Wednesday to Saturday period does look very likely now - its just a question of whether we will see much rain or not, and at what elevations.

Next Update:
Hopefully this evening - with a look at the latest accumulation forecast graphic from the Arome model and the milder second half of the week.

The skies are blue once again in Chatel and snow conditions are reported to be much improved after yesterday morning's snowfall. We found some lovely, cold, dry snow conditions up towards Mouet this morning, a reflection of the rather more sensible level of the 0c isotherm this weekend.

Snow remains a possibility on Monday pm and into Tuesday, though quantities remain uncertain and are still looking as though they may be in the 10cm to 20cm range. More on this tomorrow.

Beyond Tuesday, there continues to be differences between the major models, with ECMWF painting a mild and changeable picture, with perhaps a cool down during the weekend of the 19th, whereas GFS is drier, but also shows a milder theme for the second half of next week.

Chatel Snow Report: 12/02/2022: 6.50am

Day 66 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where temperatures are at -8c at 1000m in the valley, -4c at Avoriaz and -2.5c at 2200m, so there is a bit of an inversion, though it is sub zero at all elevations. The pistes should be good today after the additioanal boost of yesterday morning's snowfall and the overnight grooming operation. Fine weather is expected through the weekend and wind is not likely to be an issue (one or two noticeable gusts at the highest elevations possible).

As we are always on the hunt for snowfalls, this winter has been a bit of a frustrating one so far, after the copious amounts of the first half of December. However, some snow is expected on Monday, but not in the quantities that was looking possible from some charts 2 or 3 days ago. At the moment, the best outcome appears to be a 10cm to 20cm scenario, so potentially useful, rather than significant accumulations - though this could change for the better or for the worse. As for timings, some charts suggest rain and snow arriving by about mid-morning on Monday, perhaps lasting on and off into Tuesday. Initially, the snow/rain boundary may be up at around 1400m, but this may come down to the village during the afternoon. Obviously, as with all snowfalls, there is loads of uncertainty regarding all details, but we will know more when it comes into the range of the highest res model.

Thereafter, there are some mixed messages from the most recent model updates, however, the GFS model does paint a predominantly dry scenario out to the 21st. It may also become quite mild again during the second half of next week.

Next Update:
During the day.

Chatel Snow Report: 11/02/2022: 12.35pm

Day 65 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 3...

Weather & Snow Report:

The weather has brightened up gere in Chatel and the snow has stopped. The sun feels warm and there is a steady thaw of the fresh wet snow on some surfaces.

The next potential snowfall is set to arrive on Monday, however, this is beginning to look like an event which will bring more precipitation some way to the south of our area, so, at the moment, a significant snowfall looks less likely. Snow/rain boundary levels may also be an issue, but there will be a look at all this on tomorrow's updates.

The weekend is looking like seeing fine weather, with sensible temperatures and a 0c isotherm rising to between 1700m and 1900m.

Next Update:
Early Saturday.

Chatel Snow Report: 11/02/2022: 10.40am

Day 65 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The snow is petering out here in Chatel, with just a hint of brightness a few mins ago. A maximum fresh snow depth of 7cm was measured here in the village. The snow is very wet and some surfaces have less cover - especially those which have absorbed the daytime warmth of previous days.

The snowfall brings the total for the season in the village to 257cm - which is not bad at all, though it was spoiled by the mild spells which followed the big falls of the first half of December.

Next Update:
This afternoon.

Chatel Snow Report: 11/02/2022: 6.45am

Day 65 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Early rain and sleet has turned to wet snow here in Chatel since about 6am and there is now a thin, wet covering on some surfaces. 10cm of snow is still possible higher up, perhaps a bit more in places, with a light snowfall expected in the village. The snow/rain boundary should come down this morning, so that areas down the valley see a bit of snow too.

Looking at the latest precipitation radar images this morning, there does appear to be the chance of some heavier spells of snow, so, there is a just a chance that the snowfall in the village could exceed expectations... will update accordingly. The snow is expected to fizzle out by lunchtime.

Current temps are close to 1.5c in the immediate valley area, -1c at 1700m and -4c up at 2200m.

Next Update:
Later this morning / early afternoon.

Chatel Snow Report: 10/02/2022: 1.40pm

Day 64 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The skies remain crystal clear here in Chatel today and it feels warm in the village in the sunshine, however, we found a chilly breeze up at Mouet at 1770m this morning. The freezing level is lower today and it is currently about -0.5c at 2200m.

Photos below from a jog to Mouet. The L'Epervier piste remains officially closed on Barbossine, though it is being used by skiers, however it would need a fair amount of snow to officially re-open.

The latest snow/rain boundary info suggests it will be close to the village for a time early tomorrow morning, before moving down to around 850m to 950m before the snow peters out. A light snowfall looks most likely for the village, with the chance of 5cm to 10cm higher up, with a forecast range of a dusting to 12cm - which is unchanged from the other day.

Chatel Snow Report: 10/02/2022: 6.45am

Day 64 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. There is a bit of an inversion this morning with local valley temperatures of -4c, but it is above 2c at 1800m, then a touch below 0c at 2200m. The pistes which softened and wettened during the warm sunshine of yesterday will have re-frozen at all elevations overnight under the clear skies.

Today looks fine again, though there is expected to be more in the way of wind at some of the higher elevations (see wind gust graphic below) and the 0c isotherm will be easing down to around 2100m this afternoon, so temperatures will not be as high as yesterday.

Later in the night tonight, cloud is expected to increase with precipitation arriving early tomorrow. There will be a look at the snow/rain boundary forecast for this potential snowfall on the next update, but below is the latest hi-res accumulation forecast from Arome. There is the potential for some useful accumulations of snow, though the graphic clearly illustrates that it may be a marginal event in the immediate valley area.

Chatel Snow Report: 09/02/2022: 2.00pm

Day 63 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is warm here in Chatel today. Temperatures of above 10c have been recorded at elevations from 1600m to 1800m and in the sunshine, it feels like summer. I took a trip up to Mouet this morning, which is a touch below 1800m and up there, it was vest and t-shirt weather. (Photos below). The track up refelected the current snow conditions across the ski area. Areas which have been shaded all day retain cold and dry, powdery type snow. Sunnier slopes have seen early hard pack and ice, turn softer and wetter during the morning and areas which were in shade this morning, but which see afternoon sunshine were solid ice. These contrasts are typical under clear skies during temperature inversion, high pressure dominated scenarios.

The snowfall which is expected in the early hours of Friday still looks as though it could bring 5cm to 10cm of snow to elevations above the village, with a potential range of a dusting to 15cm.

Taking a look at the models predictions for this next precipitation event, we can see some differences.

During the hours when rain and snow may be falling, At 4am on Friday, the GFS models suggests the 0c isotherm at 1233m. At 7am is is forecast to be at 1285m and at 10am 1274m. At 1pm it is 1207m,

In contrast, the Arpege model has a 0c isotherm of 1800m at 4am Friday, 1633m at 7am, at 10am it is 1322m and 1pm 1113m.

The Arpege model therefore suggests a snow/rain boundary above the village for at least part of this precipitation event. More on this tomorrow, when the event will be in the range of a higher res model.

Looking further ahead and there does look like being another precipitation event on Sunday night / Monday. This has the potential to be significat, though the models have plenty of differences, so how this one pans out is far from being resolved.

Chatel Snow Report: 09/02/2022: 6.50am

Day 63 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel, where another lovely day is expected for the ski area and there should be some great piste skiing for those currently visiting the area. We have a marked temperature inversion in the area this morning, as it is locally -5c at 1000m, however, up at 1800m it is 6c and the weather station at 2200m is reporting 8c! Spring conditions are expected today, with some firm early pistes, with softening expected in the warm sunshine. Wind is not expected to be an issue, with local gusts perhaps noticeable at times. The 0c isotherm level is expected to be up at 3400m today. That will ease down tomorrow to closer to 2000m.

Overnight on Thursday, precipitation is set to return. At the moment, it looks as though the snow/rain boundary will be above the village initially, and then be close to it at breakfast time on Friday, then falling further before the snow clears away. There appears to be the chance of 5cm to 10cm of snow on the ski area, with a forecast range of a dusting to 12cm. So, a light snowfall is the most likely outcome at this stage. The snow/rain boundary will be key for the village and we should have more of an idea of this during tomorrow, when the precipitation event comes into the range of the hi-res Arome model. Note that once again, the GFS model, which provides data for most of (not all), the automated snow forecasting apps and websites, is forecasting a lower snow/rain boundary - so to avoid any potential disappointment, treat this automated output with caution. A classic example of this was the last snowfall, when it rained in the village, despite the GFS model suggesting otherwise. The GFS model has many strengths and provides a wonderful suite of forecasting data, however, its 0c isotherm forecasting and hence the snow/rain boundary does not appear to be anywhere near as accurate on our local level, as some of the other models we use.

More on the snow/rain boundary forecasts on the next update and a look at the outlook, which may see snow early next week.

Chatel Snow Report: 08/02/2022: 2.55pm

Day 62 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is feeling warm in the sunshine today here in Chatel, after a cold start, and temps have touched 7c at 1800m, bringing a feel of spring. Snow conditions are reported to be generally good today, with sunny aspect slopes seeing some spring-esque softening.

A light snowfall still looks possible at some point of Friday morning, though the timing and duration of this is being modelled differently, so whether it will provide any useful contribution remains to be see.

Thereafter, as mentioned this morning, the models are looking at some sort of precipitation event next Monday. Both major models are showing this, though the GFS shows a generally unsettled week to follow, whereas the ECMWF model suggests milder and drier conditions to follow. There does appear to be chance that this Monday event could be a significant snowfall, so it is one to watch, however, what happens beyond next Monday is highly uncertain, with various scenarios possible. It should be noted that the GFS model shows 100mm of rain equivalnet precipitation in the next 10 days for this area, which equates to approximately 1m of snowfall - if temperatures are favourable - which is possible at times.

So, in summary, mixed messages from the models, but there will be opportunities for snowfalls in the next 7 days, with the outlook beyond that, highly uncertain - but possibly unsettled.

Next Update:
Early Wed.

Clear skies today.

Chatel Snow Report: 08/02/2022: 6.40am

Day 62 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... where we are back to fine, temperature inversion weather today, which has been a feature for much of the last few weeks. Temperatures early this morning are ranging from below -7.5c in the immediate valley area at 1000m, to above 1c at 1800m and it is around 0c at 2200m. Wind is not expcted to be an issue on the ski area today and it looks like being a lovely, spring-like day, with the 0c isotherm rising above 3000m. Snow conditions on many pistes have improved after the recent snowfalls, though there remains some issues on the south facing slopes, which have no snow making machinery.

There looks as though there is a chance of a light snowfall on Friday and the good news is that snow/rain boundary level looks favourable at the moment. Thereafter, the models overnight and this morning are sniffing at something potentially arriving next week. The GFS model this morning now paints an unsettled picture from the 14th onwards, so it will be interesting to see what the ECMWF model charts look like when they come out this morning... update to follow on this during the day.

Next Update:
During the day.

Chatel Snow Report: 07/02/2022: 4.30pm

Day 61 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The technical issues appear to have been resolved, so updates should resume again early tomorrow.

The weather here has brightened up nicely here today, after the underwhelming snowfall for the village. Higher up, there are reports of 15cm of fresh snow at 1800m, however, the strong winds overnight has meant that the coverage is uneven.

The next snowfall is scheduled for Friday, though at the moment it does not look like bringing anything too significant. Beyond that, the models appear to suggest it will be dry until after mid-month, though the ECMWF model hints at something unsettled by about the 16th. Tomorrow, we should begin to get an idea of Friday's snow / rain boundary level, as it will start to come into the range of the Arpege model, which appears better at predicting such things in comparison to the GFS model. Then, later in the week, it will once again be a case of waiting to see what the highest res model suggests.

Before then, the 0c isotherm is expected to shoot up from tomorrow and reach the giddy heights of 3500m during the daytime for a couple of days. This will bring a spring feel to the area, though the shaded areas again should retain something more like winter conditions.

Next Update:
Early Tuesday.

Chatel Snow Report: 07/02/2022: 9.25am

Day 61 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 1...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. A late update this morning as a laptop issue has resulted in having to use an old back up... it started snowing yesterday afternoon, with winds becoming strong in the area too, even in the village. A couple of cm's quickly accumulated in the village during the evening, however, the snow turned very wet later in the evening and it turned to sleet and rain overnight. The result is a thin layer of wet snow for the village, howver, higher elevations should have done OK, though the snow will have been blowing around, so accumulations will be very varied.

We mentioned that this was going to be a very marginal event for the village, with the h-res model suggesting a 1600m 0c isotherm level overnight - and it has turned out that way.

There have been a few flurries this morning - but nothing to get too excired about. Will update later.

Next Update:
This afternoon.

Chatel Snow Report: 06/02/2022: 6.45am

Day 60 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update..

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Temperatures are below -6c early this morning in the immediate valley area at 1000m, and they are not far from -5c at 1800m and 2200m.

The wind is expected to increase today, so it may become noticeable at some elevations this morning and potentially disruptive this afternoon, especially later in the day. The wind gust forecast for 2pm is below (in kmh).

The weather is also expected to close in later in the day and there is some snowfall on the way. Although this precipitation event will start off as snow at all elevations of the ski area, the snow/rain boundary does look as though it will rise close to the village overnight, so accumulations for 1200m are highly uncertain, however, the hi-res Arome suggests a light snowfall for the village, with 15cm to 20cm possible higher up. These values are lower than expectations, however, this is often the case once these precipitation events come into the range of this model. However- it is by no means definitive - just a guide.

The 0c isotherm level forecast is as follows:

6pm: 1303m

10pm: 1479m

Midnight: 1470m

4am Monday: 1605m

7am Monday: 1468m

Midday Monday: 938m

An approx guide for the snow/rain boundary is to take off 300m from the above values. Periods of heavier precipitation can lower the snow/rain boundary considerably. However, the Arome graphic below does reflect the forecast of the snow/rain boundary creeping up to the village overnight.

Time is short today due to work committments, so the next update wll probably be this time tomorrow.

Chatel Snow Report: 05/02/2022: 1.05pm

Day 59 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2..

Weather & Snow Report:

The clouds have broken and it is feeling spring-like again in the sunny spells in the village, though the 0c isotherm is expected to top out at around 1600m this afternoon, so air temperatures are not as mild as yesterday.

The good news is that some snow is on the way tomorrow evening and night, potentially lasting into Monday too. This is a potentially bonus snowfall, which has upgraded in the last couple of days. There appears to be the chance of 20cm to 30cm for elevations above about 1300m, though we will hopefully get a better idea on accumulations on tomorrow morning's update. 40cm cannot be ruled out, as is the case with numbers less than 20cm.

Once again, the models do show differences in where the 0c isotherm level and hence the snow/rain boundary will be during this precipitation event.. For example - at 7pm tomorrow evening, the GFS model (which powers many of the automated snow forecasting apps and websites), suggests the 0c level at under 1000m. In contrast, Arpege has it above 1400m and the highest res Arome has it at 1381m. The GFS tends to underestimate the level of the 0c isotherm during these precipitation events - so it looks as though the snow/rain boundary may be around 1000m tomorrow evening, perhaps as high as 1100m. Arpege has the 0c level rising to 1600m overnight, which would imply a snow/rain boundary of around 1200m/1300m. Note that if the precipitation is heavy, then the snow/rain boundary can (and does) come down markedly, so these levels are not set in stone, however, for accumulating snowfall you really want to be as close to that 0c iotherm level as possible, to avoid a wet snow/slush fest.

During Monday morning, the snow/rain boundary is expected to come down considerably, perhaps as low as 500m.

Note that tomorrow is expected to be windy on some higher parts of the ski area, especially during the afternoon. Below is the wind gust forecast graphic in kmh.

Looking further ahead and the models vary on the chances of further precipitation events. The GFS model does show the chance of snow late in the week, but this is far from certain at the moment.

Chatel Snow Report: 05/02/2022: 6.35am

Day 59 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update..

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel, where there has been a bit of wet snow falling in the village early this morning, but we are close to the snow/rain boundary. Current temps are 0.5c in the immediate valley area at 1000m, -2c at 1800m and closer to -5c at 2200m. The flakes are expected to last into the second half of the morning, with a drier and brighter afternoon. Accumulations higher up look like being in the dusting category. Wind is not expected to be an issue on the ski area today.

Snowfall is still expected to arrive later in the afternoon tomorrow. This one could bring some useful or perhaps significant accumulations to the area. Note that it looks as though it will become rather windy at some elevations of the ski area tomorrow, especially as the weather closes in during the afternoon. There will be a look at these wind strengths and potential snow/rain boundary for this next snowfall, on the following update.

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 04/02/2022: 3.15pm

Day 58 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2..

Weather & Snow Report:

It is a glorious afternoon here in Chatel, with clear blue skies and warm sunshine. Snow conditions on some parts of the ski area will be spring-like today, though the shaded areas remain in the deep freezer.

The latest hi-res model forecast for the potential evening / overnight snowfall, suggests it may be only a dusting. The snow/rain boundary may be between 1100m and 1200m, with the usual margin of error.

Of more interest is the potential precipitation event which may arrive Sunday afternoon and last into Monday. There remains a chance of a significant snowfall, though the snow/rain boundary still looks like rising to somewhere around the village elevation. More on this tomorrow, when we will get the highest res model's take on it.

The GFS model is still keen on some sort of snow event on the 11th, so there is a bit of interest in the outlook, when a couple of days ago, it was looking as though we would enter an extended dry spell.

Chatel Snow Report: 04/02/2022: 6.45am

Day 58 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update..

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... where there is a slight temperature inversion early this morning, with local valley temperatures of around -2c, with 0c at 1800m and -1c at 2200m. It has been very windy higher up overnight and there may be some noticeable gusts on some of the highest parts of the ski area today. Fine weather is likely, before cloud thickens later, bringing some rain and snow this evening and tonight. As the 0c isotherm is forecast to be around 1500m this evening, then the snow/rain limit looks like being around 1200m (+/-150m) - so it will be a marginal situation for the village. Elevations above the village are expected to see something in the range of a dusting to 5cm.

There is now a reasonable chance that a front will move across the area on Sunday evening and night and into Monday morning this could bring something more useful in the way of snowfall, with just the chance of a significant snowfall. Again, it looks a marginal situation for the village elevation, with the Arpege model suggesting a 0c isotherm of around 1600m for a time, but there will be a look at this on the next update. The fact that this potential snowfall has cropped up in the charts in the last 24 hours or so, just goes to show how quickly things can change...

Below is the Arpege view of accumulations to Monday pm. It takes a broad brush approach to topography (so ignore values for lower valley areas) and is probably a rather over optimistic view of the totals... however, it would be nice if it was close to the mark!!!

Chatel Snow Report: 03/02/2022: 2.25pm

Day 57 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Time is a little short today, however, a run through the latest charts do show a more interest than was the case earlier. Apart from the chance of a little snowfall on Friday night, the ECMWF charts suggest something arriving on Sunday night / Monday morning too - which might be marginal again for the village, but could produce something useful higher up. The GFS 6z run shows a similar scenario - so there is now something to keep an eye on over the next couple of days!

After the cloud of the last few days, this afternoon feels springlike in the hazy sunshine. Temperatures of 9c are being reported at 1700m and 1800m. Some photos today were posted to the WhatsApp group. I took a trip up into the Barbossine area and had a look at the L'Epervier piste, which was officually closed, but had just enough snow on it for some people to get down it, though the snow is very thin at the bottom. Elsewhere, the snowfalls have improved piste conditions... however... some more would be nice!

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 03/02/2022: 6.45am

Day 57 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where there is an interesting temperature profie early this morning with -2 at 1000m and -4c at 2200m, however, in between those eelevations and around 1800m, it is 3c. A dry day is likely and it should be brighter than recent days and wind is not expected to be an issue.

There is a chance of a very light snowfall tomorrow night, however, the models are currently showing high pressure dominating through next week, with some very mild daytime weather arriving for a time too. So, there should be some lovely conditions for those here next week in terms of the weather, however, further snowfalls are unlikely. The only glimmer of hope from this morning's model runs (so far), is from the GFS which shows the chance of a temporary incursion from the north next Saturday. I'm not too keen on that model's evolution, as beyond next Saturday, it showed it dry out to beyond mid-month again!

Will take another look during the day, once all the model runs have updated...

Chatel Snow Report: 02/02/2022: 6.00pm

Day 56 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Rain, sleet and snow continued through the morning in the village and finally petered out early this afternoon. Higher up, there were reports of 15cm to 20cm of fresh snow at 1800m in some parts of the PDS, whereas others saw 10cm to 15cm. It looks as though this snowfall came in under expectations, and it was a bit underwhwleming at 1200m, but it has provided some useful cm's for elevations above the village. However, importantly, there has not been enough for those south facing pistes which do not have snow cannon cover - such as the reds on Barbossine.

There is the chance of a few cm's of fresh snow on Friday night (with some strong wonds too), however, thereafter it is looking like there is a chance of an extended dry spell becoming re-established.

Next Update:
Early Thursday.

Chatel Snow Report: 02/02/2022: 6.40am

Day 56 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... there is a wet 4.5cm of fresh snow on our measuring surface this morning, after the snow resumed yesterday afternoon. As expected, the snow / rain boundary has become very marginal for the village overnight and the snow on the ground is very wet. There is currently a mix of rain, sleet and snow falling in the village, with some snow in the heavier bursts of precipitaton. Current temperatures are ranging from just above 0c at 1000m, -2.5c at 1800m and -4.5c at 2200m. Further showery outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are expected this morning, with the chance of drier weather for the afternoon (timing uncertain). A few more cm's are possible above the village, with perhaps a further slushy wet covering in the village. There is also expected to be a noticeable wind at some of the higher elevations today.

The forecast 0c isotherm level is as follows:

10am: 1540m

Midday: 1580m

3pm: 1618m

So, the rain/snow boundary looks like hanging around the village with a fluctuation of +/- 200m.

There is the chance of a snowfall, all be it a potentially light one, on Friday night, however, the outlook beyond that is for a potentially dry 7 days, with the return of fine weather and temperature inversion conditions.

During the day.

Chatel Snow Report: 01/02/2022: 6.10pm

Day 55 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 3...

Weather & Snow Report:

The next snowfall has arrived late this afternoon and it is currently snowing lightly in the village. There appears to be a realistic chance of another 20cm of snow above 1600m by tomorrow lunchtime, though quantities in the village area look very uncertain, due to the snow/rain boundary potentially rising to 1300m overnight. The latest info has the 0c isotherm sitting between 1600m and 1700m between midnight tonight and lunchtime tomorrow, so that snow/rain boundary could edge up above 1300m at times. During heavier precipitation, the snow/rain boundary does ease down, however, at the moment it looks like we may end up with a bit of a wet snow/ slush scenario for the village. As we are talking about really fine margins here, the margin of error for the snow/rain boundary is probably around 150m/200m, so we shall just have to wait and see what the morning brings us...

Early Wed.

Chatel Snow Report: 01/02/2022: 10.10am

Day 55 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Very light snow is falling in Chatel this morning, though it is not really adding to the overnight accumulations.

The light snow is expected to peter out during the day before another batch arrives later. This one may bring more in the way of accumulations to the area, however, the snow/rain boundary will become marginal for the village.

The expected 0c isotherm level is as follows:

6pm: 1164m

10pm: 1427m

Midnight: 1573m

4am Wednesday: 1600m

7am Wednesday: 1578m

Midday Wednesday: 1609m

This suggests the snow/rain boundary might rise to around 1300m overnight with a margin of error of +/- 150m.

15cm to 25cm looks possible in elevations above the village, so potentially a very useful snowfall.

Looking ahead and it looks like the weather is going to return to a rather dry scenario. Some charts suggest a bit of precipitation at the weekend, but others have it dry for another 10 days from tomorrow!

Chatel Snow Report: 01/02/2022: 6.45am

Day 55 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. The latest snowfall has brought 8.5cm of fresh snow to our measuring surface here in the village. It is a mix of dry and powdery snow and graupel. Higher up, there should be a bit more than this. There is a normal temperature profile across the area at the moment, with -3c at 1000m, -8c at 1800m and -11c at 2200m. There are variable amounts of cloud overhead and it is dry. Wind is not expected to be an issue, though there may be noticeable gusts on some higher areas.

The next batch of precipitation is likely to arrive this afternoon, but more on this and the snow/rain boundaries and potential accumulations on the next update, which is scheduled for late morning - when there will also be a quick look at the outlook.

Next Update:
Later this morning.
